Bacterial cellulose nanofibrils-reinforced composite hydrogels for mechanical compression-responsive on-demand drug release

Daehwan Park et al.

Summary: The study introduces a cellulose-reinforced hybrid hydrogel system that enhances mechanical strength and enables on-demand drug release. By incorporating bacterial cellulose nanofibers (BCNFs) into a polyacrylamide (PAM) mesh, the compression strength of the hydrogel was significantly increased. Additionally, the tailored composition of BCNFs with PAM allowed for delayed drug release compared to PAM alone while enabling drug release in response to mechanical stress.

Small and large oscillatory shear properties of concentrated proteins

F. K. G. Schreuders et al.

Summary: The study used a closed cavity rheometer to evaluate the properties of concentrated protein materials during thermal treatment, with pea and soy protein isolates and wheat gluten as model matrices. The results showed that wheat gluten exhibited increased modulus while pea and soy protein isolates decreased modulus during heating. Heating induced more elasticity, with pea protein isolate losing elasticity faster than soy protein isolate. Wheat gluten displayed abrupt dissipation after extensive deformation. The dissipation ratio provided valuable insights into material behavior during thermomechanical conversions.

Probing gels and emulsions using large-amplitude oscillatory shear and frictional studies with soft substrate skin surrogates

Barbara Farias et al.

Summary: Water swellable crosslinked polymers, such as lightly-crosslinked hydrophobically modified polyacrylic acid, are commonly used in oil-in-water emulsions for their thickening properties. The rheological behavior of these polymers in emulsions was studied using small strain amplitude and large amplitude oscillatory shear experiments. The friction coefficient in tribology experiments was found to be dependent on the hydrophobicity of the substrate, polymer, and substrate roughness, providing insights for formulating skincare products with efficient lubrication properties.
