A comparative study of surface segregation and interface of La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-δ electrode on GDC and YSZ electrolytes of solid oxide fuel cells

Yi Sun et al.

Summary: This study compared the segregation and interface formation of LSCF on GDC and YSZ electrolytes, revealing that the inertness of GDC suppresses Sr segregation while chemical catchers like Zr in YSZ promote Sr segregation.

Quantifying the performance evolution of solid oxide fuel cells during initial aging process

Zewei Lyu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the degradation mechanisms in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) during initial aging process, with a focus on anode charge transfer reactions and ionic transport being the main contributors to the voltage degradation. The deterioration of the anode/electrolyte interface caused by nickel redistribution is identified as the dominant degradation mechanism.

Controlling cation migration and inter-diffusion across cathode/interlayer/ electrolyte interfaces of solid oxide fuel cells: A review

Muhammad Zubair Khan et al.

Summary: Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are a potential way to achieve efficient and clean electrochemical energy conversion, but commercialization is hindered by material degradation, especially at the cathode-electrolyte interface. Understanding cation migration and interdiffusion is crucial for improving SOFC durability, with perovskite-based oxides showing promising results. Control measures for interdiffusion in the cathode/electrolyte/interlayer are key to designing highly efficient and stable SOFCs.

An Elementary Kinetic Model for the LSCF and LSCF-CGO Electrodes of Solid Oxide Cells: Impact of Operating Conditions and Degradation on the Electrode Response

E. Effori et al.

Summary: An elementary kinetic model was developed to predict the electrochemical response of porous LSCF and LSCF-CGO electrodes, validated through experiments on symmetrical cells. The model accurately simulates experimental impedance diagrams and the evolution of electrode polarization resistance with oxygen partial pressure. Analysis shows that the transition from bulk to surface reaction paths depends on temperature, polarization, and oxygen partial pressure.

Summary: Long-term experiments in SOEC and SOFC modes at different temperatures revealed higher degradation and increased ohmic resistance in electrolysis mode, with material destabilization linked to formation of insulating phases due to interlayer diffusion, particularly at higher temperatures.

A hydrogel-assisted GDC chemical diffusion barrier for durable solid oxide fuel cells

Sangyeon Hwang et al.

Summary: Stable operation at elevated temperature is crucial for the commercialization of solid oxide fuel cells. A simple wet chemical coating method was used to fabricate a thin, dense GDC diffusion barrier layer between the cathode and electrolyte, resulting in improved electrochemical performance. The hydrogel-assisted GDC chemical diffusion barrier layer maintained initial performance after accelerated heat treatment, preventing cation interdiffusion at the interface.
