Analytical study of over-voltages in alkaline electrolysis and their parametric dependencies through a multi-physical model

Gregory De Dominici et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop a model of alkaline electrolysis to compare the performances of AEM and conventional electrolysis cells under various operating conditions, including changes in electrolyte composition for hydrogen production. The results show that over-potential behaves differently depending on the type of electrolyzer and electrolyte used. This electrolytic cell model will serve as a benchmark for further development of a comprehensive representation for alkaline electrolysis, which can be utilized for simulation and developing controlled algorithms for hydrogen production.

Ohmic resistance in zero gap alkaline electrolysis with a Zirfon diaphragm

Matheus T. de Groot et al.

Summary: Traditional alkaline water electrolyzers operate at low current densities due to high internal ohmic resistance. Using modern diaphragms like Zirfon and a zero gap configuration could potentially allow for operation at higher current densities. However, data analysis reveals that the area resistances are significantly higher in zero gap alkaline electrolyzers, suggesting factors like uneven current distribution and the presence of nanobubbles may contribute to the increased resistance.

Voltage losses in zero-gap alkaline water electrolysis

J. W. Haverkort et al.

Summary: The article provides a detailed account of the relationship between the electrodes and diaphragm in zero-gap configuration, with findings that the ohmic resistance is usually larger than that of the separator. Factors such as bubbles, hydroxide depletion, and dissolved hydrogen and oxygen contribute to voltage losses.

Seven steps to reliable cyclic voltammetry measurements for the determination of double layer capacitance

Dulce M. Morales et al.

Summary: The paper introduces a seven-step method to reliably determine double layer capacitance using scan rate-dependent cyclic voltammetry, and applies it to two different systems for validation. Results show that neglecting any step leads to significant deviations in the results, and suggests a more suitable regression model for determining double layer capacitance.
