Rice straw agri-waste for water pollutant adsorption: Relevant mesoporous super hydrophobic cellulose aerogel

Mandana Dilamian et al.

Summary: A simplistic synthesis approach was developed for fabricating ultra-light density, highly porous, and cross-linked natural cellulose aerogel from rice straw via freeze-drying process. The resulting cellulose aerogels displayed porous network structure with high specific surface area and mesopore volumes. After hydrophobic coating, the super-hydrophobic and oleophilic cellulose aerogel showed excellent adsorption capacities for organic solvents and oils.

Sustainable and superhydrophobic cellulose nanocrystal-based aerogel derived from waste tissue paper as a sorbent for efficient oil/water separation

Golnoosh Akhlamadi et al.

Summary: A novel and cost-effective method for preparing superhydrophobic, environmentally friendly, and recyclable bio-aerogel has been developed by freeze-drying the aqueous suspension of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) extracted from waste tissue paper and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) in the presence of hydrolyzed tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) sol. The aerogel has high porosity, ultra-low density, superhydrophobicity, and can selectively remove oily contaminants from water.
