Recent progress in superabsorbent polymers for concrete

Christof Schroefl et al.

Summary: Scientific interest in superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) used in conjunction with cement-based building materials has shifted towards polymer physico-chemical topics, focusing on absorption/desorption kinetics, retention of absorbed liquid, and related principles. The effects of SAPs in concrete include modifying rheology, internal curing, self-sealing and self-healing of cracks, and enhancing freezing-and-thawing durability. Recent research also explores reducing fire spalling and promoting plant growth on green wall facades using SAPs.

Swelling characterization of ionic responsive superabsorbent resin containing carboxylate sodium groups

Ming Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the swelling characteristics of superabsorbent resins in different aqueous solutions. The results showed that the carboxyl groups played a more significant role in enhancing water absorbency than other species. The swelling process of the resin was influenced by the types of cations in the external solutions.

Effect on Soil Properties and Crop Yields to Long-Term Application of Superabsorbent Polymer and Manure

Yonghui Yang et al.

Summary: Intensive farming leads to soil degradation, but the use of superabsorbent polymer and organic manure can improve soil quality and promote crop growth. Long-term continuous application of these amendments increases the number and connectivity of pores in the soil, enhances organic carbon content, field water capacity, available water content, saturated hydraulic conductivity, while reducing soil bulk density, resulting in increased crop yields.

Influences of cation valence on water absorbency of crosslinked carboxymethyl cellulose

Zhicheng Zhang et al.

Summary: The addition of superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) in soil can reduce water percolation and evaporation, but the salt-tolerance and repeating water absorbency (RWA) of prepared SAPs still need improvement. This study investigated the impact of cation valence on the structural variations of crosslinked carboxymethyl cellulose (CCMC), and found that higher addition of NaOH resulted in higher water absorbency due to the presence of more carboxyl groups. The introduction of polyvalent cations benefited the stabilization of carboxyl groups, but also hindered the swelling ability of CCMC53 samples, leading to lower water absorbency.
