Reduced Markovian Descriptions of Brownian Dynamics: Toward an Exact Theory

Matteo Colangeli et al.

Summary: This paper presents a reduction scheme for overdamped Brownian dynamics and proposes meaningful corrections to the Smoluchowski equation. The mobility coefficient is obtained using the Dynamic Invariance principle, while the diffusion coefficient satisfies the Fluctuation-Dissipation theorem. The study also provides a quantitative representation of the reduction error and highlights connections to the Maximum Entropy method and linear response theory.

Nonequilibrium statistical mechanics and optimal prediction of partially-observed complex systems

Adam Rupe et al.

Summary: This article explains the success of data-driven models in partially-observed systems. Data-driven models use techniques such as delay-coordinate embeddings to implicitly model the effects of missing degrees of freedom, outperforming physics-based models in systems with few observable degrees of freedom.

Reduced-order models for coupled dynamical systems: Data-driven methods and the Koopman operator

Manuel Santos Gutierrez et al.

Summary: This study establishes a strong connection between data-driven and theoretical approaches to achieving efficient and accurate parameterizations for model reduction. Through perturbation expansions, a general stochastic parameterization of weakly coupled dynamical systems is derived, and it is shown that truncation of expansions is not necessary when coupling is additive. Additionally, the study simplifies unwieldy integrodifferential equations into a multilevel Markovian model and establishes an intuitive connection with a generalized Langevin equation. This research supports the physical basis and robustness of the empirical model reduction (EMR) methodology while highlighting the practical relevance of the perturbative expansion used for deriving the parameterizations.
