The self-diffusivity of natural gas in the organic nanopores of source rocks

Saad Alafnan

Summary: Natural gas stored in source rocks plays a significant role in meeting energy demand. Source rocks exhibit complex transport and storage processes due to their unique pore characteristics. Nanopores in source rocks offer large surface area for hydrocarbon storage. However, our understanding of the mechanisms behind hydrocarbon storage and transport is still limited. This study investigates the dominant diffusion mechanism in representative organic nanopores and finds that free molecular diffusion is the main mechanism. Additionally, the diffusivity coefficients deviate from theoretically calculated values, especially in post-mature cases. The deviation reduces with increasing pressure and pore size. The results provide valuable insights for better describing hydrocarbon transport in source rocks.

Host-guest interactions and confinement effects in HZSM-5 and chabazite zeolites studied by low-field NMR spin relaxation

C. D'Agostino et al.

Summary: Characterizing fluid/solid interactions in porous materials is crucial for design and optimization. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spin relaxation has emerged as a rapid experimental technique for probing adsorbate/adsorbent interactions in mesoporous catalytic materials. This study validates the use of low-field NMR spin relaxation as an indicator for characterizing host-guest interactions in microporous zeolitic materials.

Quantifying the Effect of Spatial Confinement on the Diffusion and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Relaxation of Water/Hydrocarbon Mixtures: A Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study

Jorge Ivan Amaro-Estrada et al.

Summary: Molecular dynamics simulations were used to investigate relaxation mechanisms in water/hydrocarbon interfaces. The results showed that the properties of confined water at water/oil interfaces were strongly influenced by the thickness and geometry of the confinement layer. Water-oil interactions were observed close to the interface. The diffusion coefficients and NMR relaxation times of water/oil interfaces were found to be lower than bulk diffusion coefficients. The strength of confinement and geometry played a vital role in the diffusion and NMR relaxation properties.

Modeling Molecular Interactions with Wetting and Non-Wetting Rock Surfaces by Combining Electron Paramagnetic Resonance and NMR Relaxometry

Bulat Gizatullin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the wettability change of natural rocks by immersing them in a bitumen solution. NMR relaxation dispersion measurements show that oil exhibits increased relaxation rates while water exhibits decreased relaxation rates. However, this effect is only dominant at low field strengths and for spin-spin relaxation rates. The change in wettability is attributed to the change in radical concentration on the pore surface and the alteration of surface chemistry and roughness.

Modeling of natural gas self-diffusion in the micro-pores of organic-rich shales coupling sorption and geomechanical effects

Clement Afagwu et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the self-diffusion behavior during the depletion of shale reservoirs through molecular simulation and proposes a transition diffusion model sensitive to changes in pore pressure and stress. The model is compared and validated against similar work in the literature, and the results show decent predictive ability. The implications of structure tortuosity, sorption profile, and pore pressure on diffusion coefficient and gas desorption are discussed. This work provides a novel methodology for studying methane transport in realistic kerogen geometry and has implications for accurate reservoir simulation and assessment.

Clement Afagwu et al.

Summary: Diffusion tortuosity is an important parameter for calculating effective gas transport coefficients in porous media. Jiaming Wang et al.

Summary: The kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet is a prime candidate for hosting a quantum spin liquid ground state, but the existence of competing states makes theoretical prediction difficult, calling for experimental clues from model materials. Zn-barlowite and herbertsmithite are considered the best realizations of the kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet known so far, and Cu-63 nuclear quadrupole resonance is used to locally probe the inhomogeneity of delicate quantum ground states affected by disorder.
