Low- and high-density forms of liquid water revealed by a new medium-range order descriptor

Chiara Faccio et al.

Summary: In this study, a computational approach based on molecular dynamics simulations and graph theory was used to characterize the structure of liquid water. By introducing a new order parameter NTC, researchers found different high-density-liquid (HDL) and low-density-liquid (LDL) water phases in liquid water, and discovered that the HDL-like forms are not homogeneous but composed of regions with different local densities.

Evidence of a liquid liquid phase transition in H2O and D2O from path-integral molecular dynamics simulations

Ali Eltareb et al.

Summary: Different simulation techniques were used to simulate H2O and D2O, and were compared with experimental data. The results showed that the thermodynamic properties of H2O and D2O were in excellent agreement with experimental data, and exhibited anomalous maxima upon isobaric cooling, suggesting the existence of a liquid-liquid critical point. Moreover, nuclear quantum effects played an important role in the thermodynamics of water. The conclusion strongly supported the LLPT scenario to explain water's anomalous behavior, and suggested the need for improved water models to study supercooled water.

Liquid-liquid criticality in the WAIL water model

Jack Weis et al.

Summary: Recent experiments and numerical simulations have provided support to the hypothesis that a second critical point exists in deeply supercooled water. In particular, a study has found that a liquid-liquid critical point can be located using a model parameterized solely based on ab initio calculations. This finding is important for understanding the phase behavior of supercooled water.

Topological nature of the liquid-liquid phase transition in tetrahedral liquids

Summary: This article demonstrates through experiments that the liquid-liquid phase transition in tetrahedral networks can be described as a transition between an unentangled, low-density liquid and an entangled, high-density liquid, with a clear topological distinction between the two phases.

Structural characteristics of low-density environments in liquid water

Aswin Muthachikavil et al.

Summary: The existence of two structural forms in liquid water has been a long-standing point of debate. This study proposes using the average angle between oxygen atoms and their neighbors as an order parameter to describe the structural environment of water molecules, and decomposes the distribution of O-O-O angles to estimate the fractions of the two liquid forms in water. The results show good similarity between the estimated fractions of the locally favored tetrahedral structure (LFTS) and the trends reported in the literature, indicating the accuracy of the proposed order parameter in capturing the structure of the LFTS.

Structural and topological changes across the liquid-liquid transition in water

Riccardo Foffi et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown that the TIP4P/Ice water model can be studied numerically at and below its liquid-liquid critical temperature. Through simulations along a subcritical isotherm, it was found that structural changes taking place across the liquid-liquid transition are influenced by the topological properties of the H-bond network. Specifically, the high-density liquid structure originates from the folding back of long rings, bringing pairs of molecules separated by several hydrogen-bonds close by in space.
