Effect of Temperature on Local Hydration of Zn in Hematite

Sebastian T. Mergelsberg et al.

Summary: Iron (oxyhydr)oxides are common soil minerals that can host a large number of environmentally important elements, such as zinc. Heating the soil, for example during wildfires, significantly changes the structure and hydration level of these host phases. In this study, the substitution of zinc in hematite and goethite was investigated, and it was found that heating the samples to certain temperatures resulted in changes in the structure and hydration of the zinc sites, which may impact the bioavailability of trace elements.

Gas-Phase Ion-Molecule Interactions in a Collision Reaction Cell with ICP-MS/MS: Investigations with CO2 as the Reaction Gas

Khadouja Harouaka et al.

Summary: In this study, CO2 was used as a reaction gas to investigate gas-phase ion-molecule interactions. The results showed that reaction enthalpy is a reasonable predictor of reactivity with CO2. Combining ICP-MS/MS and DFT calculations allows for rapid data collection and fills the gap in literature regarding thermochemical data of CO2 reactions. This study is of importance for analytical method development.

A review of treatment methods for insensitive high explosive contaminated wastewater

William Fawcett-Hirst et al.

Summary: Insensitive high explosive materials (IHE) are increasingly used in the production of munitions, leading to contaminated wastewater that must be treated before discharge. While adsorption is a suitable treatment method, the high solubility of NTO may exceed the adsorptive capacity of carbon adsorption systems. Improvements to carbon adsorption systems are necessary to enhance adsorptive capacity and reduce costs.

Gas-phase ion-molecule interactions in a collision reaction cell with triple quadrupole-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry: Investigations with N2O as the reaction gas

Khadouja Harouaka et al.

Summary: Nitrous oxide (N2O) was used as a reaction gas for gas-phase ion-molecule interactions, showing superior oxide formation compared to O2. The study also revealed the potential of N2O to produce significant nitride species and the consistency of experimental results with predicted reaction enthalpies. New platforms demonstrated utility for studying a wide range of elements efficiently.

From NWChem to NWChemEx: Evolving with the Computational Chemistry Landscape

Karol Kowalski et al.

Summary: Chemists have been utilizing computers since the beginning to understand and solve complex chemical problems. With advancements in hardware and software, the field of theoretical and computational chemistry has evolved. Transitioning software from terascale to petascale and now to exascale computers presents challenges and opportunities for tackling large scientific challenges. One example highlighted is the NWCHEM and its redesign, NWCHEMEX, which is a codesign project aiming to take advantage of massively parallel computers and emerging software standards.

Resolving Configurational Disorder for Impurities in a Low-Entropy Phase

Sebastian T. Mergelsberg et al.

Summary: This study used ab initio molecular dynamics-guided structural analysis to model the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) of Cu2+- and Zn2+-doped hematite nanoparticles, identifying specific defect-impurity associations and analyzing the local coordination environments of Cu and Zn. The results showed considerable configurational disorder for Cu and maintained hematite-like symmetry for Zn. The study highlights the role of defects in accommodating impurities and the limitations of traditional shell-by-shell fitting of EXAFS for dopants/impurities in unprecedented bonding environments.
