National prevalence of IC/BPS in women and men utilizing veterans health administration data

Jennifer T. Anger et al.

Summary: Importance: Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a significant burden and challenging to diagnose. We estimated the national prevalence of IC/BPS through a novel methodology combining population-based data and chart abstraction. The estimated prevalence was 0.87%, with female and male prevalence of 1.08% and 0.66%, respectively, after matching to the general US population.

Summary: The study examined the clinical significance of ESSIC bladder histopathological classification on treatment outcomes for patients with interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome. Results showed that patients with histopathological findings had more favorable treatment outcomes compared to those without such findings.

Urine biomarkers in ESSIC type 2 interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome and overactive bladder with developing a novel diagnostic algorithm

Summary: Urine cytokines can serve as biomarkers for distinguishing between IC/BPS and OAB patients, leading to the development of a novel diagnostic algorithm. MIP-1 beta is the most sensitive cytokine for differentiation, while others such as IL-10, RANTES also have high diagnostic values.

Epstein-Barr Virus and Systemic Autoimmune Diseases

Gunnar Houen et al.

Summary: Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) is a highly successful human herpes virus that infects essentially all humans at some point in their lives. EBV primarily spreads through saliva and can lead to infectious mononucleosis. The infection results in an immune response and production of antibodies, which can cause chronic relapsing/reactivating infections.
