Depression and Anxiety Are Common Among Patients With Cirrhosis

Summary: This study examined the prevalence and risk factors for depression and anxiety among patients with cirrhosis in the United States. It found that nearly 1 in 6 patients with cirrhosis have moderately severe to severe depression and nearly half have moderate-severe anxiety. Self-reported poor health was identified as a significant risk factor for both depression and anxiety.

National Trends in Location of Death in Patients With End-Stage Liver Disease

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the trends in location of death in patients with ESLD, finding that there was an increase in the proportion of deaths at hospice and home during the study period. Elderly patients were more likely to die in hospice or home, while Black patients were less likely. Efforts are needed to address disparities in end-of-life care planning and improve access to death at hospice and home.

Patterns of opioid use differ in cirrhosis patients compared to those without cirrhosis, although rates of serious adverse events are similar. Future studies should further explore the safety and efficacy of opioids in cirrhosis patients to improve pain management and quality of life.
