Recent Advances in the Design of Multi-Substituted Carbazoles for Optoelectronics: Synthesis and Structure-Property Outlook

Rajendra Kumar Konidena et al.

Summary: Organic synthesis is crucial for the development of innovative organic functional materials for optoelectronic applications. Carbazole, as a versatile building block, has shown great potential for use in organic electronics due to its unique features. Recent research has focused on the polyfunctionalization of carbazole and its effects on the properties of the resulting materials.

Self-Resetting Bistable Redox Molecular Machines for Fullerene Recognition

Adriana Sacristan-Martin et al.

Summary: This article discusses the use of mimicking natural mechanisms to address control and output modulation of molecular machines. The reversible thiol/disulfide motifs in chemical systems are utilized with nonplanar corannulene moieties capable of recognizing fullerenes. Two redox-based machines have been devised: an ON/OFF switch activated by dimerization and a self-resetting host with an automated backward process that substantially modulates its affinity.

Synthesis and Properties of Bis-corannulenes

Dzeneta Halilovic et al.

Summary: Corannulenecarbaldehyde and corannulenylmethyl triphenylphosphonium bromide were combined via Wittig olefination reaction to yield dicorannuleny-lethene with 70% yield, followed by oxidative photocyclization to form a C42H18 nanographene structure in 59% yield. Interestingly, only the trans isomer of dicorannulenylethene forms cocrystals with fullerene C-60 through concave-convex and convex-convex pi-pi stacking interactions. The Mallory photocyclization can also be applied to a phenanthrene-based diarylethene precursor to generate a large bicorannulene system.

Functional Carbazole-Fullerene Complexes: A New Perspective of Carbazoles Acting as Nano-Octopus to Capture Globular Fullerenes

Xitong Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, three novel carbazolic derivatives were designed with tunable bridging linkers and carbazole units to capture fullerenes, resulting in the formation of 2-dimensional hexagonal/quadrilateral cocrystals with different stacking patterns. Good electron-transporting performances and significant photovoltaic effects were achieved in the presence of a continuous C60...C60 interaction channel. This study suggests that introducing carbazolic systems into fullerene receptors can provide new insights for versatile applications.

Corannulene: A Curved Polyarene Building Block for the Construction of Functional Materials

Mihaiela C. Stuparu

Summary: Corannulene serves as a versatile building block for materials chemistry, with applications in polymer science and electronic materials design, as well as emerging potential in the development of non-fullerene electron acceptors. It can be used in the preparation of water-soluble nanoparticles and as a two-photon imaging probe in cancer cells. Additionally, the aromatic extension of the corannulene nucleus shows promise in the synthesis of nonplanar nanographenes.
