Oxidative N-Heterocyclic Carbene Catalysis

Carmela De Risi et al.

Summary: Oxidative N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalysis enables oxidative and oxygenative transformations, producing various NHC-bound intermediates and facilitating non-umpolung processes by activating carbon atoms and heteroatoms. This review discusses the developments in the literature on oxidative NHC catalysis since 2014, with a specific focus on pivotal intermediates and their mechanistic involvement.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Photocatalyzed Tricomponent Regioselective 1,2-Diacylation of Alkenes Illuminates the Mechanistic Details of the Electron Donor-Acceptor Complex-Mediated Radical Relay Processes

Shengfei Jin et al.

Summary: Progress in developing photocatalytic reactions requires a detailed understanding of the underlying mechanisms, especially those involving electron donor-acceptor complexes. This study reports a new method for regioselective installation of two different acyl groups through photocatalytic alkene 1,2-diacylation. The research highlights the central role of electron donor-acceptor complexes in mediating the photoinduced charge transfer process and sheds light on the catalytic activities of N-heterocyclic carbenes in radical reactions.

Formation of Breslow Intermediates from N-Heterocyclic Carbenes and Aldehydes Involves Autocatalysis by the Breslow Intermediate, and a Hemiacetal

Alina Wessels et al.

Summary: In this study, the mechanism of the reaction between N-heterocyclic carbenes and aldehydes under aprotic conditions was investigated using kinetic studies and DFT calculations. Different mechanistic regimes were proposed depending on the NHC-to-aldehyde ratio, with the H-shift occurring either in the NHC-aldehyde adduct or in the equilibrium between the zwitterion and hemiacetal forms. Furthermore, an H-bonded complex of the reaction intermediate with excess NHC was detected.

Breslow Intermediates (Amino Enols) and Their Keto Tautomers: First Gas-Phase Characterization by IR Ion Spectroscopy

Mathias Paul et al.

Summary: The study reported in this paper focuses on the preparation of charge-tagged Breslow intermediates/keto tautomers derived from three different types of NHCs and aldehydes. Using ESI-MS IR ion spectroscopy, it was confirmed that in the gas phase, the Breslow intermediates derived from imidazolidin-2-ylidenes exist as diamino enols, while those derived from 1,2,4-triazolin-5-ylidenes and thiazolin-2-ylidenes exist as keto tautomers. This observation is consistent with findings in solution and in the crystalline state.

Critical Assessment of the Reducing Ability of Breslow-type Derivatives and Implications for Carbene-Catalyzed Radical Reactions**

Ludivine Delfau et al.

Summary: This study reported the synthesis of acyl azolium salts from various types of carbenes and the generation of their corresponding radicals and enolates, revealing the role of additives in the redox behavior of these compounds and correcting misconceptions about radical transformations of aldehyde derivatives. The reducing ability of enolates derived from certain carbenes was found to be underestimated, and catalytic intermediates were shown to transfer electrons efficiently at room temperature. Enol derivatives of certain carbenes were identified as powerful reducing agents.

Revealing the Similarities of α,β-Unsaturated Iminiums and Acylazoliums in Organocatalysis

Arghya Ghosh et al.

Summary: Secondary amine-catalyzed reactions via alpha,beta-unsaturated iminiums and N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-catalyzed transformations via alpha,beta-unsaturated acylazoliums are widely used electrophilic intermediates in organocatalysis for enantioselective construction of valuable molecules. Despite displaying similar reactivity patterns and conjugate additions of soft nucleophiles, there are subtle differences in reactivity between these intermediates. This Minireview aims to highlight the resemblances in reactivity between alpha,beta-unsaturated iminiums and acylazoliums in organocatalysis.

Organocatalytic Three-Component 1,2-Cyanoalkylacylation of Alkenes via Radical Relay

Yu Gao et al.

Summary: The study presents an unprecedented regioselective, intermolecular 1,2-cyanoalkylacylation of feedstock alkenes using N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) organocatalysis. The exquisite control over the radical relay process by the NHC organocatalyst enables a general platform for the synthesis of valuable ketonitriles under mild, transition-metal-free conditions. This protocol highlights the potential for late-stage functionalization of pharmaceutical architectures and natural products.
