Mechanism of CO2 reduction in carbonylation reaction promoted by ionic liquid additives: A computational and experimental study

Kai-Lun Bi et al.

Summary: The Ru-catalyzed carbonylation of alkenes using CO2 and imidazole chlorides as the promotor was studied through computational and experimental analysis. The efficiency of hydroesterification and hydroformylation was found to be correlated with the conversion rate of CO2 to CO, which was facilitated by chloride additives, particularly BmimCl and B3MimCl > BmmimCl > LiCl. In the hydroesterification reaction with MeOH, BmimCl with C-H functionality at the C2 site of the cation acted as a hydrogen donor medium, with the anion and cation working synergistically. The insertion of CO2 into the formed Ru-H bond with the assistance of chloride anion produced the Ru-COOH species, accelerating the activation of CO2.

Turning hazardous red mud into useful catalysts for the carbonylation of amines to N-formamides

Dilong Chen et al.

Summary: With the rapid development of the aluminium industry, the output of red mud waste has increased. Only 15% of red mud is currently utilized, making it essential to develop green and sustainable technologies for red mud disposal. This study reports a simple method for catalyzing the carbonylation of amines to formamides using the alkaline ingredients in red mud, achieving high conversion and selectivity. Gram-scale preparation of useful formamides was also accomplished, highlighting the potential application of materials derived from red mud in catalysis.

Advances in applications of ionic liquids for phase change CO2 capture

Wufeng Jiang et al.

Summary: Research and development of novel absorbents with high efficiency and low energy consumption is crucial for large-scale carbon dioxide emissions reduction. Ionic liquids (ILs) absorbents, with adjustable structure, negligible vapor pressure, low specific heat capacity, and moderate reaction heat, show remarkable potential for energy conservation. This article reviews the recent progress in ILs-based phase change absorbents for CO2 capture technology, focusing on phase change behaviors, reaction and phase change mechanisms, and process flow and energy consumption analyses. The challenges and outlooks on novel ILs-based phase change absorbents for CO2 capture are discussed.

Co2(CO)8 as a Solid CO (g) Source for the Amino Carbonylation of (Hetero)aryl Halides with Highly Deactivated (Hetero)arylamines

Srinivas Cheruku et al.

Summary: Carbonylation of (hetero)aryl iodides/bromides with highly deactivated 2-aminopyridines using Pd-Co(CO)(4) bimetallic catalysis was successfully achieved, with enhanced reaction rates observed when using Co-2(CO)(8) as a solid CO(g) source. The developed protocol demonstrated excellent yields and versatility, and was further extended to synthesize Trypanosome brucie and luciferase inhibitors.

Homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts for hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol under mild conditions

Shao-Tao Bai et al.

Summary: CO2 hydrogenation to methanol is a crucial technology for CO2 mitigation in a carbon neutral economy. Research on catalysts for this process focuses on lower temperatures, with insights gained from molecular catalysts and efficient heterogeneous catalysts using additives to convert CO2 into methanol. While progress has been made with molecular catalysts, the mechanisms with heterogeneous catalysts remain descriptive and require further research.
