Decoding Key Transient Inter-Catalyst Interactions in a Reductive Metallaphotoredox-Catalyzed Allylation Reaction

Bart Limburg et al.

Summary: This passage discusses the recent surge of interest in metallaphotoredox chemistry in the field of synthetic organic chemistry, highlighting the complex interactions between different catalytic components during reactions. The study of a cobalt-organophotoredox catalyzed allylation of aldehydes reveals that the commonly proposed elementary steps in reductive metallaphotoredox chemistry are more complex than previously assumed. These new insights provide a conceptually stronger reactivity paradigm for future approaches to synthetic challenges.

Investigating Oxidative Addition Mechanisms of Allylic Electrophiles with Low-Valent Ni/Co Catalysts Using Electroanalytical and Data Science Techniques

Tianhua Tang et al.

Summary: In this study, the critical oxidative addition mechanism of the ir-allyl-Co/Ni complex was investigated. It was found that Co(I)/Ni(I) species are responsible for the oxidative addition reaction. A coordination-ionization-type transition state mechanism was proposed, which was supported by computational and ligand structural analysis.

Redox-neutral synthesis of π-allylcobalt complexes from alkenes for aldehyde allylation via photoredox catalysis

Dandan Zhang et al.

Summary: This work presents a novel visible-light mediated cobalt-catalyzed aldehyde allylation method, which utilizes simple alkenes as allyl sources to produce homo-allylic alcohols. The use of easily available unactivated alkenes as an alternative to pre-synthesized allylic halides/alcohols eliminates the need for exogenous reductants. Mechanistic studies suggest that the generation of nucleophilic pi-allylcobalt(II) through the combination of allyl radical intermediates and Co-I species under photoredox conditions is the key step in the catalytic cycle.

Carbazole-2-carbonitrile as an acceptor in deep-blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence emitters for narrowing charge-transfer emissions

Chin-Yiu Chan et al.

Summary: This work presents a new acceptor for the construction of blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters. The emitters based on this acceptor exhibit deep-blue emissions with high photoluminescence quantum yields. Importantly, they also demonstrate narrowed charge-transfer (CT) emissions, which is a desirable characteristic for TADF emitters. Devices using these emitters achieve high maximum external quantum efficiencies.

Summary: In this communication, a photoredox Barbier allylation of aldehydes mediated by bismuth is described, without the need for other metals as co-reductants. The mild reaction conditions, tolerance of oxygen, and use of aqueous solvent make this photoredox methodology attractive for green and sustainable synthesis of homoallylic alcohols.

Photoredox Propargylation of Aldehydes Catalytic in Titanium

Francesco Calogero et al.

Summary: A practical and effective photochemical propargylation of aldehydes using 10 mol % of [Cp2TiCl2] as a catalyst is described. The reaction does not require stoichiometric metals or scavengers, and uses a catalytic amount of the easily prepared organic dye 3DPAFIPN as a reductant for titanium. The reaction shows good scope, with no allenyl isomers detected for simple propargyl bromide, but mixtures of propargyl and allenyl isomers observed for substituted propargyl bromides.

Photocatalytic Arylation of P-4 and PH3: Reaction Development Through Mechanistic Insight

Robin Rothfelder et al.

Summary: Detailed P-31{H-1} NMR spectroscopic investigations provide deeper insight into the mechanisms involved in the photocatalytic arylation of white phosphorus, revealing previously unrecognized side products and the unexpected behavior of the terminal reductant Et3N. The different rate of formation of these products explains the performance discrepancies of two effective catalysts, while the observation of PH3 as a minor intermediate led to the development of a new catalytic procedure for the arylation of white phosphorus. This method yields valuable triarylphosphines or tetraarylphosphonium salts depending on aryl substituents' steric profiles.

Stefano Protti et al.

Summary: The photoreactivity of triphenylamine in homogeneous media was investigated using laser flash photolysis spectroscopy and preparative experiments to evaluate the photophysical and photochemical behavior of transient N-phenyl-4a,4b-dihydrocarbazole (DHC0) under polar and non-polar solvents. The kinetic parameters of DHC0, including lifetime and rate constants, were measured, and its intermediacy in the co-oxidation of nucleophilic substrates was studied. Two oxidizing intermediates were formed from DHC0 in the presence of molecular oxygen, with different reactions on triarylphosphines and sulfides.
