Phase change materials in photonic devices

Zilun Gong et al.

Summary: Recent developments in reconfigurable photonic devices heavily rely on the effective refractive index change enabled by phase change materials (PCMs). Different PCMs have been successfully utilized for multilevel modulations in both free-space and integrated photonics. However, challenges such as compatibility with commercial production, stability, and accessibility of stimuli still exist in PCM photonics.

Physical, linear and nonlinear optical properties of amorphous Se90-xTe10Mx (M = Zn, In, Pb, x=0, 5) chalcogenide thin films by electron-beam deposition

Lawrence K. Benjamin et al.

Summary: Amorphous thin films of Se90Te10 and Se85Te10M5 (M = Zn, In, Pb) were deposited on glass substrates by electron-beam evaporation. The study investigated the effect of Zn, In, and Pb incorporation in place of Se on the optical and physical properties of chalcogenide Se90Te10. Optical constants were deduced from transmission and reflectance spectra, and the optical gap was evaluated using Tauc plot and Wemple-DiDomenico single oscillator model. Chemical bond approach and consideration of disorders from localized states in the mobility gap were employed to explain the optical trends, while dielectric and nonlinear optical parameters were calculated for the thin films.

Optimization of linear and nonlinear optical parameters of As40Se50Te10 thin films by thermal annealing

D. Sahoo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of annealing on the optical properties of As40Se50Te10 thin films, showing an increase in both linear and nonlinear optical constants. Additionally, XPS and Raman spectroscopy revealed a conversion of heteropolar to homopolar bonds. Therefore, annealing temperature can be utilized as a significant tool in controlling the optical constants of these chalcogenide films.
