Combined Ibuprofen and Curcumin Delivery Using Mg-MOF-74 as a Single Nanocarrier

Shane Lawson et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks are widely used as drug delivery platforms due to their textural properties and physiochemical tunability. In this study, Mg-MOF-74 was utilized for combined delivery of ibuprofen and curcumin, demonstrating the potential for dual-drug delivery. However, high curcumin loading may decrease drug loading efficiency for ibuprofen and inhibit its release. Overall, this study expands the use of MOFs for drug delivery applications and shows promise for supplemental drug administration via orally ingested tablets.

Gold Nanorod Coating with Silica Shells Having Controlled Thickness and Oriented Porosity: Tailoring the Shells for Biosensing

Vincent Pellas et al.

Summary: The coating of gold nanorods with a silica shell enhances their stability and expands their applications in biosensing, drug delivery, and photothermal therapy. Different pH conditions can control the thickness and structure of the silica shell, while using mercaptopropyl-trimethoxysilane (MPTMS) as a surface primer allows for the production of ultra-thin and controllable silica shells. Complete elimination of core-free silica nanoparticles can be achieved through the addition of a suitable amount of CTAB during the purification step.

Synthesis of mesoporous CuFe2O4@SiO2 core-shell nanocomposite for simultaneous drug release and hyperthermia applications

Mehdi Talaei et al.

Summary: Magnetic CuFe2O4 nanoparticles were synthesized via a sol-gel combustion and coated with mesoporous SiO2. The CuFe2O4@SiO2 nanocomposite showed high ibuprofen loading and controlled drug release, with potential applications in biomedicine. Coating CuFe2O4 nanoparticles with mesoporous silica reduced cytotoxicity and improved drug release properties, although it decreased hyperthermia ability.

Controlled syntheses of Mg-MOF-74 nanorods for drug delivery

Jiaqi Hu et al.

Summary: Nanoscale Mg-MOF-74 materials of different sizes were prepared through a two-step solvothermal method, with well-shaped nanorods of 200 nm selected for drug carrier. These nanorods demonstrated a high loading capacity for the anti-cancer drug CHC. After coating with PDA, cytotoxicity experiments showed the Mg-MOF-74@PDA nanocomposites to be biocompatible and non-interfering with cellular metabolism, highlighting their potential as a new biomedical material for cellular drug delivery.

Mixing Mg-MOF-74 with Zn-MOF -74: A Facile Pathway of Controlling the Pharmacokinetic Release Rate of Curcumin

Shane Lawson et al.

Summary: This study successfully demonstrated the potential pathway of controlling the pharmacokinetic rate of drug release by varying the ratio of Mg-MOF-74 and Zn-MOF-74. Increasing Mg-MOF-74 concentration was shown to enhance both the amount of curcumin delivered and the pharmacokinetic rate of drug delivery. The profound relationship between the Mg-MOF-74 loading and the rate of curcumin delivery was highlighted.

Curcumin Delivery on Metal-Organic Frameworks: The Effect of the Metal Center on Pharmacokinetics within the M-MOF-74 Family

Shane Lawson et al.

Summary: The study found that a 30 wt% curcumin loading in the M-MOF-74 family resulted in increased drug delivery and kinetics compared to a 50 wt% loading, regardless of the metal center. Using Mg-MOF-74 as a drug carrier led to a twofold enhancement in release rate compared to Ni, Co, or Zn transition metals, attributed to Mg's increased solubility. Therefore, using MOFs with more soluble metal centers can promote rapid pharmacokinetics.
