Advances in Deep Neuropathological Phenotyping of Alzheimer Disease: Past, Present, and Future

Mustafa N. Shakir et al.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the presence of neurofibrillary tangles and amyloid beta plaques in the brain. Advancements in technology have greatly enhanced our understanding of the disease, including diagnostic criteria and the identification of co-pathologies. Despite the lack of a cure, recent advancements in biomarkers and machine learning offer potential new therapies and precision medicine approaches.

A weakly supervised deep learning-based method for glioma subtype classification using WSI and mpMRIs

Wei-Wen Hsu et al.

Summary: Accurate glioma subtype classification is critical for the treatment management of patients with brain tumors. In this study, a novel hybrid CNN-based method using whole slide imaging (WSI) and multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) is proposed for glioma subtype classification. The method overcomes the label constraint issue and enhances the robustness of predictions by fusing results from both modalities.

Interpretable deep learning of myelin histopathology in age-related cognitive impairment

Andrew T. McKenzie et al.

Summary: Age-related cognitive impairment is a complex condition with multiple pathological factors. In this study, a weakly supervised multiple instance learning algorithm was used to predict cognitive impairment based on whole slide images of brain tissue sections. Attention analysis helped identify the underlying subregional architecture and cellular features associated with cognitive impairment. The results demonstrate the potential of interpretable deep learning in identifying unexpected aspects of pathology in cognitive impairment and other neurobiological disorders.

BrainSec: Automated Brain Tissue Segmentation Pipeline for Scalable Neuropathological Analysis

Zhengfeng Lai et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an automated segmentation pipeline (BrainSec) for segmenting grey matter/white matter, which combines a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) module and a post-processing module. The robustness and reliability of BrainSec are demonstrated through testing on over 180 Whole Slide Images (WSIs). BrainSec is also integrated with an existing pathology classification model to identify and visualize the distribution of different pathologies in segmented grey matter/white matter regions.
