Interpretation of Brain Volume Increase in Multiple Sclerosis

Tomas Uher et al.

Summary: The study found that approximately 26.3% of MRI scans in MS patients showed apparent brain volume increase (BVI). The repeated occurrence of BVI was associated with clinical disease activity in 50% of cases. BVI was also linked to shorter time between MRI scans, lower T2 lesion volume increase, and higher normalized brain volume.

Ponesimod Compared With Teriflunomide in Patients With Relapsing Multiple Sclerosis in the Active-Comparator Phase 3 OPTIMUM Study A Randomized Clinical Trial

Ludwig Kappos et al.

Summary: In the OPTIMUM trial, ponesimod showed superiority over teriflunomide in reducing annualized relapse rate, fatigue, MRI activity, brain volume loss, and NEDA status, but not in confirmed disability accumulation. The safety profile was consistent with previous observations and known S1P receptor modulators.

2021 MAGNIMS-CMSC-NAIMS consensus recommendations on the use of MRI in patients with multiple sclerosis

Mike P. Wattjes et al.

Summary: The 2021 revision of guidelines on MRI use for multiple sclerosis patients integrates recommendations from various organizations to improve the application of MRI for diagnosis, prognosis, and monitoring of individuals with multiple sclerosis. It suggests changes in MRI acquisition protocols, cautious use of gadolinium-based contrast agents, and extends recommendations to the use of MRI in children, during pregnancy, and in the post-partum period for patients with multiple sclerosis.
