Chronic electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves via deep-red light transduced by an implanted organic photocapacitor

Malin Silvera Ejneby et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the use of an organic electrolytic photocapacitor for wireless chronic electrical stimulation of the sciatic nerve in rats, transducing deep-red light into electrical signals and implanted within a thin cuff around the nerve for over 100 days. This device shows potential for reliable and safe modulation of neural tissue with reduced invasiveness.

Organic electrolytic photocapacitors for stimulation of the mouse somatosensory cortex

Florian Missey et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the use of novel organic electronic devices, OEPCs, which can be activated by deep-red light without the need for external power connections. Stimulation of cortical brain tissue in mice using these devices implanted subcutaneously or beneath the skin and skull showed wireless stimulation of the whisker motor cortex, evoking both behavior and sensory responses. Coating OEPCs with a conducting polymer formulation significantly increased charge storage capacity, optimizing photoelectrical stimulation.

Stretchable gold nanowire-based cuff electrodes for low-voltage peripheral nerve stimulation

Samuel Lienemann et al.

Summary: This study developed a high performance soft and stretchable cuff electrode based on inert materials for low-voltage nerve stimulation. The stretchable cuff electrodes showed excellent stability under strain cycling and one million stimulation pulses, achieving saturated homogeneous stimulation of the sciatic nerve at only 200 mV. The combination of favourable mechanical properties and good electrode performance makes it ideal for low power supply applications within bioelectronic medicine.

Development and characterization of a chronic implant mouse model for vagus nerve stimulation

Ibrahim T. Mughrabi et al.

Summary: Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has been shown to suppress inflammation and autoimmune diseases, but the effects of chronic VNS and the technical challenges of long-term interface with the vagus in mice remain unanswered. A scalable model for long-term VNS in mice was developed and validated, showing significant heart rate responses and suppressed TNF levels in endotoxemia without impairing vagus-mediated reflexes. This model provides a tool to study the physiology of the vagus and investigate long-term VNS as therapy for chronic diseases modeled in mice.
