Preussochromone Puzzle: Structural Revision of Preussochromones E and F by Total Synthesis

Marc Paul Beller et al.

Summary: A stereoselective synthesis method for the proposed and actual structures of natural products preussochromones E and F is reported. The key step involves a ring-closing metathesis reaction to form a five-membered ring and install the trans configuration of the annulated five-six membered ring system. Analysis of the (3)J NMR couplings between the isolated natural product and the synthesized compound revealed the cis annulation in its real structure, which can also be synthesized using an intramolecular aldol reaction.

Yong Wang et al.

Summary: The green tandem reaction starting from indoles and diazo compounds utilizes water and fluorinated alcohol as solvent and promoter, respectively, to synthesize 3,3'-bis(indolyl)methanes under metal-free conditions. The sole by-products released are N-2 and water. Absence of water and fluorinated alcohol results in Wolff rearrangement product.

Dirhodium(II,II) Paddlewheel Complexes

Radim Hrdina

Summary: Homoleptic dirhodium(II,II) paddlewheel complexes with the general formula Rh(2)A(4) have diverse applications in chemical research and industry, serving as catalysts, detectors, enzymatic inhibitors, or building blocks for molecular scaffolds. They are commonly used in organic synthesis to transfer electron-deficient species, activate unsaturated bonds, catalyze hydrogenation, and participate in oxidation/reduction processes. The complexes can be prepared from basic inorganic precursors or post-functionalization of paddlewheel structures, allowing modulation of electrochemical potential, geometry, and physical/chemical properties of the metal complex.

Characterization of Benzo[a]naphtho[2,3-f]pentalene: Interrelation between Open-shell and Antiaromatic Characters Governed by Mode of the Quinoidal Subunit and Molecular Symmetry

Akihito Konishi et al.

Summary: The singlet open-shell character and antiaromaticity are rarely coexist in the same molecule in pi-conjugated carbocycles, making it crucial to understand their interrelationship in order to control electronic properties. The newly synthesized benzo[a]naphtho[2,3-f]pentalene 6 exhibits an open-shell character and moderate antiaromatic feature, shedding light on the balance between these two characteristics. Insights from this series provide a thought-provoking conclusion about the interrelation between open-shell and antiaromatic characteristics.

Metal-free visible-light-induced aerobic oxidation of α-diazoesters leading to α-ketoesters in air

Ruisheng Liu et al.

Summary: A metal-free, visible-light-promoted strategy has been developed for the construction of alpha-ketoesters via aerobic oxidation of alpha-diazoesters with dioxygen at room temperature. Using cheap Eosin Y as the photocatalyst and O-2(air) as the oxidant, this protocol offers a mild and efficient approach to a wide range of alpha-ketoesters in moderate to good yields. Preliminary mechanistic studies indicate the involvement of photo-excited singlet oxygen in the reaction system.
