Independent gradient model based on Hirshfeld partition: A new method for visual study of interactions in chemical systems

Tian Lu et al.

Summary: The powerful independent gradient model (IGM) method has limitations in graphically studying weak interactions. In this article, an improved version of IGM, called IGM based on Hirshfeld partition (IGMH), is proposed to overcome the shortcomings. The rigorous physical background of IGMH is demonstrated through various application examples, showcasing its important value in intuitively understanding interactions in chemical systems.

Advances in the Synthesis of Copolymers from Carbon Dioxide, Dienes, and Olefins Published as part of the Accounts of Chemical Research special issue Sustainable Polymers

Shan Tang et al.

Summary: Carbon dioxide (CO2) has long been considered a sustainable comonomer for polymer synthesis. Incorporating CO2 into polyolefin materials has been challenging, but a breakthrough has been made by using a metastable lactone intermediate, 3-ethylidene-6-vinyltetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-one (EVP), which can be produced from CO2 and butadiene. This strategy allows for the synthesis of highly versatile copolymers from an olefin, CO2, and butadiene.

Efficient imidazolium ionic liquid as a tri-functional robust catalyst for chemical fixation of CO2 into cyclic carbonates

Rajendra B. Mujmule et al.

Summary: The recent increase in CO2 levels has had a significant impact on the environment, leading to a demand for an effective catalyst to convert CO2 into valuable chemical products. This study demonstrates a simple method for the chemical fixation of CO2 into cyclic carbonates using a one-pot synthesized tri-functional-imidazolium bromide ionic liquid, without the need for solvents, metals, or additives.

Progress in the catalytic reactions of CO2 and epoxides to selectively provide cyclic or polymeric carbonates

Gulzar A. Bhat et al.

Summary: Sustainability requires the reuse of carbon sources from CO2 emissions, making carbon capture and utilization essential. Coupling of oxiranes (epoxides) with CO2 can generate cyclic carbonates and polymeric materials, providing a potential solution. It is important to use epoxides derived from renewable resources for a sustainable process.

Fixation of CO2 into Cyclic Carbonates by Halogen-Bonding Catalysis

Rui Yan et al.

Summary: Halogen bonding, similar to hydrogen bonding, was introduced into the catalytic cycloaddition of carbon dioxide into epoxide reactions. A series of halogen-bond donor catalysts containing N-iodopyridinium halide were synthesized and evaluated, with 4-(dimethylamino)-N-iodopyridinium bromide identified as the optimal catalyst. The mechanism of halogen-bonding catalysis was proposed and demonstrated through successful CCE reactions.

Highly efficient metal/solvent-free chemical fixation of CO2 at atmospheric pressure conditions using functionalized porous covalent organic frameworks

Gulshan Singh et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the successful fixation of CO2 from atmosphere into cyclic carbonates using a polar functionalized covalent-organic framework (COF-SO3H) as a metal-free heterogeneous catalyst. The COF-SO3H possesses high heat of adsorption for CO2 and catalyzes the cycloaddition of CO2 with epoxides under metal/solvent-free atmospheric pressure conditions, showing good recyclability.

The dynamic behavior and intrinsic mechanism of CO2 absorption by amino acid ionic liquids

Jiahuan Tong et al.

Summary: Reducing carbon dioxide emissions is crucial for sustainable development. A study on 12 AAILs revealed the dominant role of anions in CO2 absorption and the synergistic absorption by multiple-sites of amino and carboxyl groups in the anion. These findings provide guidance for molecular design of AAILs for CO2 capture, especially in manned closed spaces.
