The efficiency of photothermal action of gold shell-isolated nanoparticles against tumor cells depends on membrane interactions

Sabrina A. Camacho et al.

Summary: The use of photoexcited gold shell-isolated nanoparticles (AuSHINs) has been found to effectively reduce the viability of tumor cells while causing minimal damage to healthy cells in vitro. These effects can be explained by the different interactions of AuSHINs with tumor and healthy cell lipid extracts at the molecular level. AuSHINs penetrate deeper into tumor cell membranes, affecting the lipid chain cleavage and causing more significant photoinduced damage compared to healthy cells.

Summary: The study focused on enhancing the relaxivity of a manganese and iron-oxo cluster grafted within porous polystyrene nanobeads with increased surface area. The synthesis of the cluster-nanocarrier under miniemulsion conditions resulted in porous nanobeads approximately 70 nm in diameter, leading to higher relaxivity. The stability assessment and synchrotron X-ray fluorescence microscopy showed promising results for in vivo applications.
