Describing the adsorption of sodium tripolyphosphate on kaolinite surfaces in a saline medium by molecular dynamics

Gonzalo R. Quezada et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the adsorption capacity of sodium triphosphate in kaolinite using theoretical molecular approach combining quantum calculations and molecular dynamics simulation. It was found that triphosphate can self-aggregate, especially in saline solutions, and form stable sodium-mediated bridge-type interactions on kaolinite surfaces.

Strengthening Solid-liquid Separation of Bauxite Residue through the Synergy of Charge Neutralization and Flocculation

Hua Zeng et al.

Summary: The strong surface charge and high fineness of bauxite residue have posed a challenge for its solid-liquid separation. This study proposed a two-step method involving the synergy of lime and polyacrylamide to accelerate the separation process and reduce turbidity of the supernatant.

Variable elliptical vibrating screen: Particles kinematics and industrial application

Chenlong Duan et al.

Summary: The variable elliptical vibrating screen (VEVS) improves screening efficiency by adapting the material mass along the direction of screen length, with a theoretical model developed to analyze screen surface motion law. VEVS showed increased material moving velocity and reduced total screening time compared to equal-amplitude screen (EAS). VEVS demonstrated higher screening efficiency and lower total misplaced material content in industrial production settings.

Understanding the flocculation mechanism of quartz and kaolinite with polyacrylamide in seawater: A molecular dynamics approach

Gonzalo R. Quezada et al.

Summary: The study utilized molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the affinity of flocculant in mining tailings with colloidal magnesium precipitates. It was found that at high pH values, solid magnesium precipitates appear, causing a sharp decrease in the effectiveness of the flocculant, mainly due to its undesired association with brucite. This phenomenon was experimentally verified.

A new insight into the adsorption behavior of NPAM on kaolinite/water interface: Experimental and theoretical approach

Bao Ren et al.

Summary: The research found that the adsorption probability and capacity of NPAM on kaolinite surfaces increase with the number of chains, enhancing the bridging performance and reducing turbidity to promote floc formation. However, an excessive number of NPAM chains may slightly weaken the interaction energy with kaolinite surfaces, while increasing turbidity and floc size.

Advanced solid-liquid separation for dewatering fine coal tailings by combining chemical reagents and solid bowl centrifugation

Cuong V. Nguyen et al.

Summary: The study highlights the importance of clay mineral surface chemistry in the dewatering process of clay-rich mine tailings. By neutralizing the clay surface charge with salts and flocculating with salt-resistant flocculants, an effective dewatering technique can be achieved. Combining chemical reagents with solid bowl centrifugation can deliver successful dewatering outcomes and improve water quality for recycling.

Experimental and molecular dynamics simulation study on the effect of polyacrylamide on bauxite flotation

Ziyong Chang et al.

Summary: The study showed that polyacrylamide (PAM) has a significant impact on bauxite flotation, with high concentrations reducing recovery and selectivity. PAM may hinder collector adsorption and cause unselective flocculation. Hexametaphosphate can mitigate the negative effects of PAM and improve flotation performance.

Enhanced dewatering of oil sands tailings by a novel water-soluble cationic polymer

Vahid Vajihinejad et al.

Summary: This study investigates the flocculation of oil sands mature fine tailings (MFT) using poly(VBTMAC) as a flocculant, showing that the polymer's hydrophobic nature and positive charges contribute to neutralizing the negative charges of MFT clays and forming larger aggregates. The results demonstrate that poly(VBTMAC) outperforms commercially available anionic polyacrylamides in terms of production ease, dewatering rate, and sediment strength, but requires higher dosages for better performance.
