Experimental investigation of the drainage characteristic and stability mechanism of gel-stabilized foam used to extinguish coal fire

Quanlin Shi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the stability characteristics of gel-stabilized foam (GSF) through the analysis of foam half-life, drainage process, microcosmic liquid film structure, and stability mechanism. The results show that the GSF exhibits a unique three-stage drainage process and the formation of a gel structure enhances its stability. SEM-EDS analysis reveals the composition of the gelified film, which mainly consists of O, C, and Na elements derived from polymer and surfactant molecules. The gelified film in GSF delays bubble coarsening and drainage rate, reducing the coalescence and rupture rate. Furthermore, GSF demonstrates superior fire-resistance characteristics and coverage effect on the heat source. The study suggests that GSF has great potential for applications involving the extinguishment of coal fires.

Evaluation of the spontaneous combustion tendency of corrosion products in oil tanks based on TOPSIS methodologies

Hui Liu et al.

Summary: Thermogravimetry was used to obtain thermodynamic parameters of corrosion products in oil tanks, and then the CRITIC method was applied to calculate objective weights for evaluation indexes. The TOPSIS theory was used for comprehensive evaluation of the spontaneous combustion tendency. The results showed that the mass loss rate at the ignition point had the highest weight in determining spontaneous combustion tendency, and higher heating rates resulted in stronger tendencies for spontaneous combustion.

Macrocharacteristics and the inhibiting effect of coal spontaneous combustion with various treatment durations of ionic liquids

Yang Xiao et al.

Summary: The inhibiting effect of two ionic liquids on coal spontaneous combustion was investigated by treating coal samples for various durations and conducting thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry experiments at different heating rates. The study optimized treatment durations for the strongest inhibiting ability and validated the results through kinetic analysis, ultimately finding that treatment with 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide for 180 days had the optimal inhibiting effect.
