Novel polycarbonate membrane embedded with multi-walled carbon nanotube for water treatment: a comparative study between bovine serum albumin and humic acid removal

Homayun Khezraqa et al.

Summary: Flat sheet polycarbonate/multi-walled carbon nanotube (PC/MWCNT) nanocomposite membranes with different nanoparticle contents were prepared using the phase inversion method. Membrane characteristics were analyzed, and membranes containing 0.1 wt% MWCNTs showed better hydrophilicity, porosity, PWF, and mechanical properties. Addition of 0.1 wt% MWCNTs led to significant improvement in fouling recovery ratio in filtration of humic acid and bovine serum albumin.

Summary: This study presents a novel capillary-assisted interfacial polymerization (CAIP) approach to fabricate metal-organic framework (MOF)-polyamide (PA) nanocomposite membranes. By regulating the PA-MOF interactions, CAIP achieves effective exposure of MOF nanochannels on the membrane surface and a high cross-linking gradient in the vertical direction of the PA matrix, resulting in improved water permeance and selectivity between nutrient ions and PFASs.
