Fabrication of metal-organic framework-mixed matrix membranes with abundant open metal sites through dual-induction mechanism

Caijiao Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, supported thin MOF-MMMs with abundant open metal sites were proposed to improve the N-2/CH4 separation performance. The selectivity layer with open metal sites was formed through dual-induction mechanism of in-situ Co2+ ion doping and PDMS solution post-modification. The results showed that the number of open metal sites increased gradually with the in-situ Co2+ ion decoration and PDMS solution post-modification, and PDMS could repair the intercrystalline defects of the MOF membranes. The synthesized ZIF-8 MMMs exhibited high permeance and moderate selectivity.

Tailoring selective pores of carbon molecular sieve membranes towards enhanced N2/CH4 separation efficiency

Hyun Jung Yu et al.

Summary: The importance of controlling the effective pore size in a newly developed hybrid carbon molecular sieve matrix for enhanced N-2/CH4 selectivity is reported through experimental characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. A new class of CMS membranes with excellent N-2/CH4 selectivity is demonstrated by pyrolysis of a homogeneous blend. DFT calculations suggest that electron accumulation at SiOx phases hinders CH4 diffusion more than N-2, resulting in a smaller effective pore size and enhanced selectivity.
