The Intrinsic Parameters of the Polyamide Nanofilm in Thin-Film Composite Reverse Osmosis (TFC-RO) Membranes: The Impact of Monomer Concentration

Mengling Zhang et al.

Summary: The topmost polyamide nanofilm in a TFC-RO membrane creates the realistic resistance zone for water and salt molecules. The intrinsic thickness of the membrane plays a crucial role in determining water permeability. Adjusting the concentration of reacting monomers can control the intrinsic thickness and affect water permeability constant. The presence of defects on the film surface can hinder water permeation.

Re-thinking polyamide thin film formation: How does interfacial destabilization dictate film morphology?

Ines Nulens et al.

Summary: The article proposes a method that links synthesis and morphology to study the relationship of thin-film polyamide selective layers prepared via interfacial polymerization (IP), focusing on the interfacial stability of the system and the morphological shift of the film. By analyzing the correlation between PA morphology and the defined parameter space, a better understanding of the physical phenomena and potential issues in the IP process can be achieved.

Deciphering the Role of Amine Concentration on Polyamide Formation toward Enhanced RO Performance

Lu Elfa Peng et al.

Summary: In this study, the influence of m-phenylenediamine (MPD) concentration on the performance of thin film composite (TFC) polyamide membranes was investigated. It was found that the water permeance of the TFC membranes is affected by the thickness of the polyamide film and the formation of nanovoids. Optimal water permeance was observed at an intermediate MPD concentration, while better membrane rejection was achieved at higher MPD concentrations.

Interfacial Polymerization at the Alkane/Ionic Liquid Interface

Chang Liu et al.

Summary: The study introduces an interfacial polymerization method at the alkane/ionic liquid interface, using ionic liquid as the solvent to synthesize diverse polyamide nanofilms. This approach relies on the diffusion of acyl chloride from the alkane into the ionic liquid, unlike conventional methods where amines diffuse into water.

Does interfacial vaporization of organic solvent affect the structure and separation properties of polyamide RO membranes?

Lu Elfa Peng et al.

Summary: The study showed that using organic solvents with higher vapor pressure during the interfacial polymerization process led to the formation of larger voids in the polyamide thin film and higher membrane water permeability. By preparing polyamide thin films at a free interface, the vapor effect was suppressed, resulting in the disappearance of nanovoids and nearly identical membrane permeability regardless of the organic solvent used for the process.
