Global and regional circulation trends of norovirus genotypes and recombinants, 1995-2019: A comprehensive review of sequences from public databases

Joseph A. Kendra et al.

Summary: Noroviruses, with their extreme genetic diversity and rapid distribution, pose challenges for the development of effective vaccines and treatments. A comprehensive analysis of over 30,000 norovirus sequences from 1995 to 2019 revealed the predominance of the GII.4 genotype, along with the identification of numerous recombinant strains. This analysis provides a crucial historical foundation for future research on norovirus emergence, distribution, and the design of cross-protective vaccines.

Changing Predominance of Norovirus Recombinant Strains GII.2[P16] to GII.4[P16] and GII.4[P31] in Thailand, 2017 to 2018

Pattara Khamrin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution of norovirus genotypes and recombinant strains in children hospitalized with diarrhea in Chiang Mai, Thailand from 2017 to 2018. The results showed a prevalence of 14.9% of norovirus infection, with the majority being of GII genogroup. Various recombinant strains were identified, with GII.2[P16] being predominant in 2017 and replaced by GII.4[P16] and GII.4[P31] in 2018.

An increase in prevalence of recombinant GII.3[P12] norovirus in sporadic acute diarrhea in children in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, 2018-2021

N. V. Epifanova et al.

Summary: This study reveals an increase in the detection rate of recombinant GII.3[P12] norovirus in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, from 6.8% in 2018-2019 to 34.9% in 2020-2021. The circulation of GII.3[P12] noroviruses in the study area is the result of several independent introductions, either directly from the Western Pacific region or through the Asian part of Russia. The study highlights the polyphyletic origin, geographical expansion, and growing epidemic significance of the recombinant GII.3[P12] noroviruses.

High proportion of norovirus infection and predominance of GII.3 [P12] genotype among the children younger than 5 in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo

Jecelyn Leaslie John et al.

Summary: This study investigated the burden and genotype distribution of NoV in children under 5 years with AGE in Sabah, Malaysia. It found that the most common genotypes of NoV were GII.3 [P12], and the Sabahan NoV samples shared ancestry with genotypes from predominantly East Asian countries. The Sabahan strains formed independent clusters with significant bootstrap values, indicating clonal spread after entering Sabah.

Summary: MEGA software, a mature tool for computational molecular evolution, has been enhanced with new additions for building timetrees of species, pathogens, and gene families using rapid relaxed-clock methods. These additions include methods for estimating divergence times, confidence intervals, and new options for tagging sequences with spatiotemporal sampling information. The enhancements aim to improve user experience, result quality, and the pace of biological discovery.
