A Randomized Controlled Trial of a Smartphone-Based Well-Being Training in Public School System Employees During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Matthew J. Hirshberg et al.

Summary: While the mental health of students during the COVID-19 pandemic has received considerable attention, this study highlights the importance of addressing the well-being of educators. The study found that a smartphone-based meditation app, the Healthy Minds Program (HMP), significantly reduced psychological distress and improved well-being among teachers. These findings suggest that the HMP could be an effective approach to support the mental health and well-being of educators and have positive implications for student outcomes.

Which Adolescents Are Well-Suited to App-Based Mindfulness Training? A Randomized Clinical Trial and Data-Driven Approach for Personalized Recommendations

Christian A. Webb et al.

Summary: This study explores the potential of mindfulness apps in helping adolescents cope with stress and suggests a data-driven approach to identify which adolescents would benefit the most from such apps. The results show that the mindfulness app significantly reduces rumination in adolescents, especially those with high levels of rumination.

Mind-Wandering in Adolescents Predicts Worse Affect and Is Linked to Aberrant Default Mode Network-Salience Network Connectivity

Christian A. Webb et al.

Summary: This study explored the emotional and cognitive states of adolescents with depressive symptoms using ecological momentary assessment (EMA), focusing on the affective correlates and consequences of mind-wandering. Results showed that adolescents with anhedonia were more likely to mind-wander to unpleasant content, and mind-wandering was associated with higher concurrent negative affect. Additionally, greater levels of mind-wandering within the anhedonia group were linked to stronger connectivity between the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and networks related to attentional control and affect/salience detection.

App-Based Mindfulness Training for Adolescent Rumination: Predictors of Immediate and Cumulative Benefit

Christian A. Webb et al.

Summary: Mindfulness training is effective in reducing rumination among adolescents, and mindfulness apps provide a convenient way for teens to access such training. Baseline adolescent characteristics can predict the effectiveness of app-based mindfulness training, with factors like higher rumination and lower emotional suppression being associated with better outcomes. Further research is needed to compare these predictive models against non-mindfulness conditions.

Assessing mental health apps marketplaces with objective metrics from 29,190 data points from 278 apps

Sarah Lagan et al.

Summary: The study reviewed 278 mental health apps from iOS and Android stores using a standardized framework. Results showed that app popularity did not correlate with clinical relevance metrics. Most apps offered similar features, with low update frequency and the need for personal matching to select the most suitable app.
