Systematic Review of Lifestyle Interventions for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus in Pregnancy and the Postpartum Period

Shuyuan Huang et al.

Summary: This study examines the characteristics and effectiveness of lifestyle interventions for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) during pregnancy and the postpartum period to prevent Type 2 diabetes. The results show that interventions with personalized care and good participant retention have significant effects on improving glucose regulation and weight change. However, limitations such as lack of personalized interventions, low participant retention rates, and lack of culturally sensitive care restrict the effectiveness of other interventions.

Adverse metabolic outcomes in the early and late postpartum after gestational diabetes are broader than glucose control

Christophe Kosinski et al.

Summary: This study found that the prevalence of metabolic complications increased in women with gestational diabetes in the late postpartum period, mainly due to an increase in fasting glucose and obesity, despite no change in weight. Predictors for late postpartum obesity, pre-diabetes, and MetS were identified, which could help identify high-risk individuals and target preventive measures.

Summary: Research has shown that lifestyle interventions combining diet and exercise have limited success in preventing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), with exercise-only interventions reporting risk reductions ranging from 3% to 49%. The combination therapy of diet and exercise is the first-line treatment for GDM, showing positive effects on maternal weight gain and the prevalence of infants born large-for-gestational age, but there is inconclusive evidence on the effects of diet or exercise as standalone therapies for GDM treatment.
