Additive Manufacturing Processes in Medical Applications

Mika Salmi

Summary: Additive manufacturing (AM, 3D printing) is widely used in the medical and dental fields, particularly for personalized and customized solutions. Different AM processes have varying degrees of importance and applications in medical and dental applications. Common materials in medical AM include thermoplastics, photopolymers, and metals such as titanium alloys.

Analysis of early failure rate and its risk factor with 2157 total ankle replacements

Jung Woo Lee et al.

Summary: This study analyzed data from TAA patients and identified significant risk factors for early failure, including chronic pulmonary disease, diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, hyperlipidemia, dementia, and alcohol abuse. Surgical indications and preoperative patient counseling should take these factors into consideration.

Mathematical approach to design 3D scaffolds for the 3D printable bone implant

Wiktoria Wojnicz et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the design of an artificial scaffold structure to reduce stress-shielding phenomenon. Experimental validation shows that 3D scaffold samples with different material properties can achieve mechanical properties similar to trabecular bone tissue.

The role of additive manufacturing for biomedical applications: A critical review

Rakesh Kumar et al.

Summary: Additive manufacturing technology, also known as 3D printing, is rapidly revolutionizing the medical industry by providing customized solutions for patients, including dental implants, heart valves, and joint replacements. This technology creates physical models directly from CAD designs by layering materials, resulting in robust mechanical properties.

Additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V thin struts via laser powder bed fusion: Effect of building orientation on geometrical accuracy and mechanical properties

S. Murchio et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanical properties of thin L-PBF Ti6Al4V lattice struts at different building orientations. The results showed a tendency for fatigue life to decrease with decreasing building angle, mainly due to the increase in surface texture and decrease in cross-sectional regularity for low printing angles. The sensitivity to these factors was low in monotonic tensile tests, and strut failure behavior was examined using dynamic digital image correlation (DIC) of tensile tests and scanning electron imaging (SEM) of fracture surfaces.
