Influence of post-heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-Cu-Mg-Zr alloy manufactured by selective laser melting

Yanfang Wang et al.

Summary: A direct aging regime was proposed to maintain the grain-boundary strengthening and precipitation strengthening in modified conventional wrought aluminum alloys, resulting in a higher yield strength compared to the normal T6 heat treatment. The direct aging treatment preserved the ultrafine grains and precipitated spherical L1(2)-Al3Zr particles, while the solution treatment and aging led to grain coarsening and the presence of coarsening L1(2)-Al3Zr particles, nano-sized S' phases, and GPB zones. Both the direct aging and solution treatment and aging samples exhibited higher strength than other SLMed Al-Cu-Mg series alloys, comparable to the wrought AA2024-T6 alloy.

Laser-based directed energy deposition of novel Sc/Zr-modified Al-Mg alloys: columnar-to-equiaxed transition and aging hardening behavior

Zihong Wang et al.

Summary: The research focused on achieving columnar-to-equiaxed transition (CET) in Al-based alloys through directed energy deposition (DED) processing with Sc-and-Zr modifications. By introducing primary Al-3(Sc,Zr) nucleation sites, CET was successfully achieved, and the relationship between solidification control parameters and precipitation behavior was established. Increasing Sc/Zr content led to a fully equiaxed grain structure, indicating the effectiveness of the approach in controlling grain morphology in laser additive manufacturing.

Elevated temperature ductility dip in an additively manufactured Al-Cu-Ce alloy *

Sumit Bahl et al.

Summary: The study found that the Al-9Cu-6Ce alloy fabricated by laser powder bed fusion exhibited a decrease in tensile elongation at elevated temperatures, accompanied by the progression of strain localization in the heat affected zone leading to failure. However, at other temperatures, a higher strain-rate sensitivity (SRS) improved the tensile elongation.

Laser powder b ed fusion of high-strength Sc/Zr-modified Al-Mg alloy: phase selection, microstructural/mechanical heterogeneity, and tensile deformation behavior

Zihong Wang et al.

Summary: By using laser powder bed fusion to process Sc/Zr-modified Al-based alloys, the precipitation behavior of primary Al-3(Sc,Zr) was studied. It was found that the precipitation of primary Al-3(Sc,Zr) could be effectively suppressed in the inner region of the molten pool, inducing the formation of a heterogeneous alpha-Al matrix. Direct aging introduced heterogeneous secondary Al-3(Sc,Zr) precipitates within alpha-Al matrix, resulting in reduced mechanical heterogeneity and improved tensile ductility.
