Evolution of mass losses and evolved gases of crude oil and its SARA components during low-temperature oxidation by isothermal TG-FTIR analyses

Jin Huo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the low-temperature oxidation (LTO) characteristics of crude oils and their SARA components under isothermal conditions. It was found that mass loss in the LTO region was mainly caused by hydrocarbon evaporation, and the interactions between SARA components influenced the formation of products during LTO reactions.

Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)/fluoropolymer bilayer: a promising dielectric for electrowetting applications

Pranjali G. Yedewar et al.

Summary: In this study, electrowetting on a bilayer dielectric stack (BDS) made from PMMA and fluoropolymer was investigated. The effective capacitance of the BDS was found to be inversely proportional to the layer thickness. The BDS showed consistent electrowetting response on different surfaces with varied PMMA layer thickness, and was successfully used to manipulate the oil-liquid interface on a liquid lens.

PGMA-grafted MWCNTs: correlation between molecular weight of grafted PGMA and dispersion state of MWCNTs-PGMA in an epoxy matrix

Hefeng Li et al.

Summary: The correlationship between the molecular weight of surface-grafted polyglycidyl methacrylate (PGMA) and the dispersion state of PGMA-grafted MWCNTs was systematically investigated in this study. The molecular weight of surface-grafted PGMA was measured using X-ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS) and thermos-gravimetric analyzer (TGA). The results showed that the dispersion state of MWCNTs-PGMA in PMMA solution was enhanced with the increase in the molecular weight of grafted PGMA. The EP composites exhibited the highest enhancement in mechanical properties when using MWCNTs-PGMA-3 with the largest PGMA molecular weight as the reinforcement.

The effects of surface chemistry on the accumulation of extracellular traps on poly(methyl methacrylate) and the implications on other immune cells

Ashley Clarke et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the influence of polymer surface chemistry on the release of Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) and their impact on macrophage cells. The findings showed that altering the functional groups of poly(methyl methacrylate) significantly affected the release of NETs and cell adhesion. Furthermore, the adsorption of NETs onto surfaces altered the activation of downstream cells.

Study of the thermal degradation of flame-retardant polyester GFRP using TGA and TG-FTIR-GC/MS

Tingting Qiu et al.

Summary: The thermal degradation behaviors of commercial flame-retardant unsaturated polyester glass fiber-reinforced plastic were studied, revealing that the process can be divided into two stages with the dehydration of aluminum trihydrate and breakage of ester linkages leading to major mass loss in the first stage, followed by consecutive reactions generating toxic volatiles.

Non-isothermal TG/DTG-FTIR kinetic study for devolatilization ofDalbergia sissoowood under nitrogen atmosphere

Ajay Sharma et al.

Summary: The study focused on the chemical characterization and pyrolysis kinetics of Dalbergia sissoowood (DSW), including proximate, ultimate, biochemical compositions, and TG-FTIR analysis. Various volatiles were identified during pyrolysis using FTIR coupled with TG system. The activation energies for DSW pyrolysis were evaluated at different heating rates, with the variations in pyrolysis behavior explained based on the type of released volatiles over time. The solid-state kinetic models proposed by Malek method, specifically the 3-D diffusion model followed by random nucleation, provided the best fits with the TG results.

Protein adsorption to poly(2-aminoethyl methacrylate)-grafted Sepharose gel: Effects of chain length and charge density

Linling Yu et al.

Summary: Grafting functional polymer chains onto porous resins has been found to increase adsorption capacity and uptake rate in protein chromatography. An increase in polymer chain length led to higher adsorption capacity, but uptake rate showed an up-down trend. Partial charge neutralization on the grafted resin improved uptake rate but decreased salt tolerance.

Synthesis of chitosan grafted polymethyl methacrylate nanopolymers and its effect on polyvinyl chloride membrane for acetone recovery by pervaporation

Amritanshu Banerjee et al.

Summary: Biopolymer nanoparticles based on chitosan offer a cost-effective, non-toxic alternative to traditional nanoparticles, and are more compatible with polymer membranes. Chitosan, as a cationic polymer surfactant, helps generate polymer nanoparticles for improving the organophilicity of PVC membranes. The membranes prepared with chitosan grafted PMMA nanopolymers showed enhanced performance in terms of acetone flux and selectivity, fitting closely to ENSIC and solution-diffusion model for sorption and pervaporation data, respectively.

Wood-Mimicking Bio-Based Biporous Polymeric Materials with Anisotropic Tubular Macropores

Vierajitha Srikanthan et al.

Summary: The study focused on designing wood-mimicking polymeric structures using a double porogen templating approach, resulting in biporous materials with anistotropic tubular macropores surrounded by a nanoporous matrix. The two porosity levels could be independently tuned by varying structural parameters, and the possibility to chemically modify the pore surface to vary material surface properties was successfully demonstrated.

RAFT polymerisation of renewable terpene (meth)acrylates and the convergent synthesis of methacrylate-acrylate-methacrylate triblock copolymers

Rachel L. Atkinson et al.

Summary: Terpenes are considered ideal candidates for sustainable polymer feedstocks due to their natural abundance and availability from existing waste streams. By using RAFT control, well-defined polymers and precise di- and multiblock copolymer architectures can be synthesized. A wide range of T-g values are observed for terpene (meth)acrylate homopolymers, which can be utilized to create renewably-sourced hard-soft block copolymers.

Experimental and theoretical study on kinetic behaviour of coal gangue and raw coal using model reconstruction

Bei Li et al.

Summary: The combustion characteristics, functional groups, and kinetic behavior of coal gangue (CG) and raw coal (RC) were investigated using TG/FTIR techniques. Results showed that CG contained more aliphatic hydrocarbons and naphthenic bands than RC, leading to the production of more gaseous products after 400 degrees C. Three decomposition stages for both samples were identified based on characteristic temperatures obtained from TG data.
