3D geochemical characterization of organic-rich shales of the Irati Formation, Parana Sedimentary Basin: New perspective for CO2 geological storage in southeastern Brazil

Saulo B. de Oliveira et al.

Summary: This study assessed the potential of the Irati Formation shale layers in southeastern Brazil as sites for CO2 geological storage. Two potential shale gas reservoirs were identified based on organic geochemical parameters and petrography, and two locations were found to be more suitable for CO2 storage based on thermal maturity data. Therefore, a combination of organic chemistry and spatial analysis can be used as a guide to define reservoirs for CO2 storage in organic-rich shales within the Irati Formation.

Summary: The study evaluates the CO2 geological storage potential of the Irati Formation in the Parana Basin in Southeastern Brazil, using three-dimensional modeling techniques to assess CO2 storage capacity and site selection. The results indicate that the organic-rich shale unit in the area has significant CO2 storage potential, which could support the implementation of new projects.
