Impact of COVID-19 on the US Construction Industry as Revealed in the Purdue Index for Construction

JungHo Jeon et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has had unprecedented impacts on the US construction industry, causing labor shortages, project suspensions and cancellations, and disruptions in supply chains and logistics. Understanding these effects and future changes is crucial for the industry. This study utilizes the Purdue Index for Construction (Pi-C), which measures the health status of the construction industry based on five dimensions and corresponding metrics, to assess the impact of the pandemic. The study identifies the relationship between COVID-19 and Pi-C metrics, develops prediction models using deep learning algorithms, and forecasts the trends in the construction industry. The results show significant impacts in the economy and stability dimensions, while the social dimension remains unaffected. The Pi-C predicts no significant adverse impacts on the US construction industry from the pandemic until the end of 2022.

Effectiveness of Interventions for Controlling COVID-19 Transmission between Construction Workers and Their Close Contacts

Ziyue Yuan et al.

Summary: The transmission dynamics of COVID-19 in the construction industry were studied to establish effective nonpharmaceutical interventions. The control of exposed individuals' close contacts was found to be the most effective measure, while the contribution of indirect transmission pathways at construction sites was weak. Vaccination of both construction workers and their close contacts is also recommended to reduce the total attack rate.

Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Demand, Output, and Outcomes of Construction Projects in Singapore

Florence Y. Y. Ling et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Singapore's construction industry, revealing significant delays, cost overruns, and lower quality in projects. The research findings indicate a decrease in construction demand and output due to a shortage of labor and compliance with safety measures. Tender prices are predicted to continue rising in the short term, with a decrease expected after mid-2022. The study's unique contribution lies in quantifying project outcomes during the pandemic and predicting tender price indexes for the next 5 years. It emphasizes the need for policy makers to enact regulations promoting the adoption of productive technologies to reduce reliance on labor, despite the increased costs associated with these technologies.

Variability in transmission risk of SARS-CoV-2 in close contact settings: A contact tracing study in Shandong Province, China

Tim K. Tsang et al.

Summary: This study assessed the transmissibility of SARS-CoV-2 virus in different contact settings through contact tracing. The results showed that households, healthcare facilities, and workplaces are efficient settings for transmission. Timely identification of potential superspreaders in the most transmissible settings is crucial for controlling the pandemic.

Muhammed Semakula et al.

Summary: Rwanda has localized COVID-19 cases mainly in the central and southwest regions, with some clusters in the northeast. Being male, having a relationship with the index case, and being coworkers are identified as important risk factors for COVID-19 transmission in Rwanda.

The unique features of SARS-CoV-2 transmission: Comparison with SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV and 2009 H1N1 pandemic influenza virus

Zhonglan Wu et al.

Summary: From 2002 to 2019, three deadly human coronaviruses emerged, causing outbreaks of SARS, MERS, and Covid-19. Covid-19 shares similarities with the 2009 H1N1 pandemic in terms of global spread and characteristics of high viral shedding and transmission by pre-symptomatic individuals. To control Covid-19 transmission, identifying transmission sources through virus shedding testing and interrupting chains of transmission through social distancing and masking are essential.

An evidence review of face masks against COVID-19

Jeremy Howard et al.

Summary: The science on public mask wearing to prevent COVID-19 transmission is rapidly evolving. Evidence suggests that wearing masks reduces the transmission of infected respiratory particles, especially when compliance is high. It is recommended to promote widespread use of face masks in public settings, along with existing hygiene practices, social distancing, and contact tracing strategies.

Serial interval and incubation period of COVID-19: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Muluneh Alene et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the overall average serial interval and incubation period of COVID-19 by combining findings of existing studies. The weighted pooled mean serial interval of COVID-19 was found to be 5.2 days and the mean incubation period was 6.5 days. The study suggests that presymptomatic transmission may account for a significant number of COVID-19 cases, as the average serial interval is shorter than the average incubation period.

Evolving Epidemiological Characteristics of COVID-19 in Hong Kong From January to August 2020: Retrospective Study

Kin On Kwok et al.

Summary: This study characterized the epidemiology of the first two epidemic waves of COVID-19 in Hong Kong, revealing changes in asymptomatic case proportions and peak R-t values. The findings indicated that interventions and cluster involvement affected containment delays, while serial intervals decreased over time and were influenced by mobility. The study emphasized the importance of vigilance against COVID-19 and suggested the need to consider temporal variations in epidemiological parameters for outbreak control.

COVID-19 Superspreading Suggests Mitigation by Social Network Modulation

Bjarke Frost Nielsen et al.

Summary: Although COVID-19 has caused severe suffering globally, the efficacy of nonpharmaceutical interventions has been greater than typical models have predicted. Evidence is mounting that the pandemic is characterized by superspreading, which requires modeling at the scale of individuals. Using a mathematical model, it is shown that superspreading drastically enhances mitigations which reduce the overall personal contact number, with social clustering further increasing this effect.
