An overview of planar flow casting of thin metallic glasses and its relation to slot coating of liquid films

Eric A. Theisen et al.

Summary: Planar flow casting (PFC) is a method for producing metallic alloy foils by extruding molten liquid through a nozzle slot and quenching on a moving roller. The similarities and differences between PFC and slot coating processes are highlighted in terms of operability ranges and common defects.

Laser patterning assisted devitrification and domain engineering of amorphous and nanocrystalline alloys

Ahmed Talaat et al.

Summary: Laser patterning and devitrification were investigated as a novel method to achieve emergent properties in modified regions at the surface of ribbons. The study focused on Fe-based amorphous ribbons annealed at various laser powers. Finite element analysis simulations estimated extremely high heating and cooling rates. Surface melting followed by rapid solidification and the formation of an amorphous structure were observed. The research shows the potential to exploit spatially optimized phase transformations to achieve extreme heating and cooling rates that are otherwise inaccessible.
