Arc-Induced Nitrate Reagent Ion for Analysis of Trace Explosives on Surfaces Using Atmospheric Pressure Arc Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry

Yuanji Gao et al.

Summary: This study presents the rapid surface detection of explosives using atmospheric pressure arc desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (APADI-MS), which avoids the need for inorganic anionic additives and simplifies mass spectra. The method showed considerable sensitivity in the negative ion mode and displayed good linear response for the studied explosives. The mechanisms of APADI for explosive ionization and desorption were examined and verified.

Substituent effects on the intermolecular interactions and emission behaviors in pyrene-based mechanochromic luminogens

Ze-Dong Yu et al.

Summary: This study designed and synthesized two pyrene-based luminogens with cyanoethylene functional groups, and investigated their photophysical properties and mechanochromic properties in dilute solution and solid state. The results showed that the substituent effect played an important role in the mechanochromic properties. The emission behavior was further explored through theoretical simulations and X-ray crystallography.

Unusual Alternating Crystallization-Induced Emission Enhancement Behavior in Nonconjugated ω-Phenylalkyl Tropylium Salts

Reece D. Crocker et al.

Summary: The study reports a series of novel omega-phenyl n-alkyl tropylium tetrafluoroborates, which exhibit alternating physicochemical properties, with odd-carbon compounds existing as room temperature ionic liquids and even-carbon compounds as crystalline solids. The compound with the highest photoluminescent quantum yield in this series showed an unusual arrangement of carbocationic dimer in the solid state. XRD analysis and ab initio calculations provided interesting insights into these systems.

PL sensor for sensitive and selective detection of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol based on carbazole and tetraphenylsilane polymer

Xue Guo et al.

Summary: A novel polymer PCzSi based on 2,7-carbazole and tetraphenylsilane has been developed for the sensitive and selective detection of nitroaromatics, particularly 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP). The polymer showed a high sensitivity towards TNP, with a selective detection achieved through PL titration experiments. The potential of the polymer as a solid PL sensor for practical applications was demonstrated through the fabrication of paper strips for TNP solution and vapor detection.

Pyrene-fused hexaarylbenzene luminogens: Synthesis, characterization, and aggregation-induced emission enhancement

Chuan-Zeng Wang et al.

Summary: Six novel pyrene-fused hexaarylbenzene derivatives were synthesized and characterized, showing aggregation-induced emission enhancement in THF/H2O mixtures. The tunable, variable, and sensitive AIEE features were illustrated through theoretical calculations, single crystal X-ray diffraction, and photophysical measurements in solution and in the solid state. Both theoretical and experimental results emphasized the importance of considering multiple photoluminescence when studying and designing molecules with this phenomenon.

Summary: A series of Py-R molecules with different energy band gaps and emission colors were successfully synthesized, where the charge transfer tendencies could be controlled by substituent effects. Experimental and theoretical studies showed good correlation between experimental data and calculated results, with substituent effects playing a significant role in band gap control. Additionally, Py-CN compound exhibited efficient sensing ability towards nitro explosives as a chemical sensor.

Alkyl chain regulation: distinctive odd-even effects of mechano-luminescence and room-temperature phosphorescence in alkyl substituted carbazole amide derivatives

Liangjing Tu et al.

Summary: A series of carbazole amide derivatives were synthesized with different lengths of n-alkyl chains, showing that the parity of the alkyl chains had a significant impact on their photophysical behaviors. Compounds with even-numbered alkyl chains exhibited efficient mechanoluminescence and strong room temperature phosphorescence, while odd-numbered counterparts showed no mechanoluminescence and inferior phosphorescence. The observation of this parity effect on the mechanoluminescence property in this work is a novel finding.
