Detection of singlet oxygen by EPR: The instability of the nitroxyl radicals

Henrique F. V. Victoria et al.

Summary: The use of spin traps and redox probes coupled with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) is an effective method in evaluating the efficiency of photosensitizers and photocatalysts in various processes involving reactive oxygen species. This study analyzed the kinetics of radical generated by the oxidation products of a specific redox probe (Hydroxy-TEMP) in the presence of water-soluble porphyrins under white light illumination. Factors such as probe concentration, pH, and porphyrin photostability were evaluated, and the mechanism of radical degradation and porphyrin photobleaching were investigated. The results provide valuable insights into the evaluation and interpretation of photosensitizer efficiency.

Pyridoxal water-soluble cobalt(II) helicates: Synthesis, structural analysis, and interactions with biomacromolecules

Francisco Mainardi Martins et al.

Summary: Helical complexes composed of organic ligand strands and metallic centers, called helicates, have potential interactions with biomacromolecules. In this study, water-soluble cobalt(II) double-stranded helicates were synthesized and their interactions with biomacromolecules were analyzed. The results showed different binding capacities of these complexes with DNA and albumin, and the main intermolecular forces involved were Van der Waals and hydrogen bonds.

Fluorescent pyrene moiety in fluorinated C6F5-corroles increases the interaction with HSA and CT-DNA

Thiago Acunha et al.

Summary: Fluorinated corroles were biologically evaluated for their binding affinity to human serum albumin (HSA) and calf-thymus DNA (CT-DNA) using multiple spectroscopic techniques and molecular docking calculations. The pyrene moiety increased interactions with both HSA and CT-DNA, likely due to pyrene planarity, while the fluorinated corroles showed different interaction modes with HSA and CT-DNA.

Halogenated Gallium Corroles:DNA Interaction and Photodynamic Antitumor Activity

Ling-Gui Liu et al.

Summary: Halogenated gallium corroles were synthesized and their interaction with calf thymus DNA was investigated, showing an outside binding mode. Among them, compound 3-Ga displayed low cytotoxicity to normal cells but high phototoxicity to liver cancer cells HepG2, inducing tumor cell apoptosis through generation of ROS and disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential upon light illumination.

Unveiling the photophysical, biomolecule binding and photo-oxidative capacity of novel Ru(II)-polypyridyl corroles: A multipronged approach

Thiago Acunha et al.

Summary: Two fluorinated corrole derivatives, H(3)MebpyCor and RuMebpyCor, were synthesized and characterized for their photophysical, electrochemical, and photooxidation behavior. Both corroles exhibited low fluorescence quantum yields in solvents, with relaxation pathways through nonradiative processes. Theoretical analysis highlighted the alterations in electronic transitions induced by introducing a Ru(II) ion and the role of solvents in defining the optical spectra of the corroles. Interaction with biomolecules showed potential applications in photoinactivation, with unique binding regions identified for Human Serum Albumin and calf thymus DNA.

Maximiliano L. Agazzi et al.

Summary: DMC603+ is an effective amphiphilic photosensitizer with potential broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties, exerting a PDI effect through both photoprocesses and the type II pathway in bacteria and fungi. The presence of potassium iodide enhances the PDI effect by forming reactive iodine species.

Charge density distribution effect in pyrrolidine-fused chlorins on microbial uptake and antimicrobial photoinactivation of microbial pathogens

Daniel A. Heredia et al.

Summary: The charge density distribution in tetrapyrrolic macrocycles greatly influences the efficacy of inducing photodynamic inactivation of pathogens. One novel chlorin compound with more positively charged amino groups showed greater movement capacity, while another with intrinsic positive charges on aromatic rings was more effective in photoinactivating both strains of bacteria using lower concentrations and shorter irradiation periods. Both compounds were able to form singlet molecular oxygen and superoxide anion radical in solution, but only one had rapid binding ability and efficient photoinactivation on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus cells.

Investigation of the triplet excited state and application of cationic meso-tetra(cisplatin)porphyrins in antimicrobial photodynamic therapy

Dariane Clerici Jornada et al.

Summary: This manuscript investigates the photophysical properties of tetra-cisplatin porphyrin derivatives and their antimicrobial photoinactivation effects against Gram + and Gram - bacterial strains. The results suggest that the compound substituted at the meta position is the most efficient photosensitizer against bacterial cultures, indicating potential applications of tetra-cationic porphyrins containing cisplatin derivatives in clinical infections.
