Climate Change-Induced Changes in the Chemistry of a High-Altitude Mountain Lake in the Central Alps

Sandra M. Steingruber et al.

Summary: Mountains are sensitive to climate change, and the loss of ice from the cryosphere is a clear sign of climate-related effects. The study in the Central Alps shows an increase in solute concentrations in a mountain lake impacted by a rock glacier over the past 30 years. The presence of sulfate-bearing evaporites and the influence of permafrost thawing on water quality in high-alpine settings are highlighted.

Chemical weathering in the upstream and midstream reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo basin, southern Tibetan Plateau

Zhengliang Yu et al.

Summary: The study reveals the significant role of the upstream and midstream of the Yarlung Tsangpo in the global carbon cycle, with rock weathering playing a key role in the chemical weathering process. The results show a high proportion of rock weathering caused by sulfuric acid, and a larger contribution of carbonate dissolution during the monsoon season.

Mobilization of Geochemical Elements to Surface Water in the Active Layer of Permafrost in the Russian Arctic

Xiaowen Ji et al.

Summary: The study shows that deepening of the active layer and intensification of geochemical processes in the Arctic lead to the release of chemical substances to adjacent aquatic landscapes. Manganese may serve as a proxy for predicting processes occurring in the active layer during the annual summer-autumn thaw.
