Investigating the impacts of glacier melt on stream temperature in a cold-region watershed: Coupling a glacier melt model with a hydrological model

Xinzhong Du et al.

Summary: Stream temperature is an important indicator for biodiversity and ecosystem health in stream ecosystems. This study developed a coupled model that combines a temperature index-based glacier melt model with a SWAT equilibrium temperature model to accurately simulate stream temperature in glacierized cold regions. The model was tested and applied in the upper Athabasca River basin in western Canada, showing good performance and accurately reproducing the impacts of glacier melt on streamflow and stream temperature. The study also assessed the role of glacier melt runoff in affecting stream temperature under climate change scenarios, revealing that changes in glacier melt runoff can significantly impact stream temperature. The study emphasizes the need to explicitly consider the impact of glacier melt in process-based models to accurately predict future climate change impacts on stream temperature in glacierized watersheds.

Why does snowmelt-driven streamflow response to warming vary? A data-driven review and predictive framework

Beatrice L. Gordon et al.

Summary: Climate change is altering the snow accumulation and ablation process in mid-latitude mountainous regions, affecting water resources downstream. However, our ability to predict streamflow changes is restricted by the variability of snow dynamics and the lack of a consistent framework to understand the dominant mechanisms. This study provides a data-driven review and proposes a framework comprising three testable mechanisms, aiming to improve streamflow prediction and management decisions.

A Process-Conditioned and Spatially Consistent Method for Reducing Systematic Biases in Modeled Streamflow

Andrew Bennett et al.

Summary: This article introduces improved bias correction techniques for correcting systematic errors in streamflow predictions from hydrologic models. By considering river network topology and accounting for other processes, these techniques achieve spatial consistency and temporal consistency in the correction. The study found that these methods can reduce systematic bias in simulated streamflow and are suitable for input to water management models. Furthermore, conditioning on daily minimum temperature as a proxy for snowmelt processes can improve the timing of the corrected streamflow.

Linking fire-induced evapotranspiration shifts to streamflow magnitude and timing in the western United States

Natalie M. Collar et al.

Summary: The impact of wildfire on water availability is a critical issue in the western United States. The study found that fire-induced reductions in actual evapotranspiration (ETa) can lead to increased post-fire discharge. The effect of wildfire on streamflow magnitude varies seasonally and is more pronounced in basins with larger burned areas. The results highlight the higher relative risk of fire-induced hydro-modification for water providers with small source-water collection areas.

Disentangling aggregated uncertainty sources in peak flow projections under different climate scenarios

Hadush Meresa et al.

Summary: Evaluation of peak flood magnitude and frequency in the future at a catchment scale under global warming is crucial for water resource management and flood risk management. This study develops a framework to examine changes and disentangle uncertainties in peak flow, which is tested at five Awash catchments in Ethiopia, a region exposed to extreme flood risk. The results showed that projected extreme precipitation and peak flow magnitude could increase substantially in the coming decades by 30% to 55%.

Identifying the Annual and Seasonal Trends of Hydrological and Climatic Variables in the Indus Basin Pakistan

Muhammad Shahid et al.

Summary: The study illustrates that climate warming and precipitation changes in the Indus Basin have varying impacts on different regions, particularly noticeable in the spring season. While some areas exhibit increasing trends in streamflow, others show decreasing trends, potentially due to different influencing factors. The future outlook suggests an exacerbation of drought severity in the Indus Basin.

A mechanism for regional variations in snowpack melt under rising temperature

Amato Evan et al.

Summary: As the planet warms, mountain snowpack is expected to melt earlier in spring, with sensitivity to warming varying across regions. A physical model suggests that the timing of snowpack disappearance is largely influenced by mean temperature and seasonality, with the most significant changes seen in coastal regions, the Arctic, western United States, Central Europe, and South America.

Summary: The study reveals significant changes in climate and hydrological regimes in the Indus basin, with projections of substantial increases in temperature and uncertain future precipitation trends. Hydrological extremes are likely to intensify, necessitating critical modifications in water resources management strategies and action plans.
