A risk prediction model for hepatocellular carcinoma after hepatitis B surface antigen seroclearance

Hyun Yang et al.

Summary: After HBsAg seroclearance, there is still a risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Age, cirrhosis, family history, and more-than-moderate alcohol consumption are independent factors predictive of HCC. The novel prediction model based on these four variables allows reliable risk estimation of HCC after HBsAg seroclearance.

How to achieve functional cure of HBV: Stopping NUCs, adding interferon or new drug development?

Grace L. H. Wong et al.

Summary: Functional cure of hepatitis B is defined as sustained undetectable circulating HBsAg and HBV DNA after a finite course of treatment. Current therapies for HBV rarely achieve cure, but novel antiviral and immunomodulatory strategies show promise in increasing the chance of cure through personalized approaches. The development of safe, effective, and affordable curative therapies must be coupled with standardized virologic and immunologic assays to confirm target engagement and to assess response.

Hepatic Decompensation in Cirrhotic Patients Receiving Antiviral Therapy for Chronic Hepatitis B

Hye Won Lee et al.

Summary: This study reported the incidence and predictors of hepatic decompensation among cirrhotic patients receiving antiviral therapy for chronic hepatitis B. The results showed that hepatic decompensation is uncommon but not eliminated, with factors such as baseline liver stiffness measurement, diabetes, and blood indicators being associated with decompensation.

Durability of hepatitis B surface antigen seroclearance and subsequent risk for hepatocellular carcinoma: A meta-analysis

Aixin Song et al.

Summary: HBsAg seroclearance post-treatment cessation is associated with durable outcome and low HCC incidence, especially in patients with sustained HBsAg seroclearance and anti-HBs seroconversion. The importance of achieving HBsAg seroclearance early is emphasized in clinical practice.

Comparison of Long-Term Clinical Outcomes Between Spontaneous and Therapy-Induced HBsAg Seroclearance

Jonggi Choi et al.

Summary: The study found that the risks of HCC and clinical events were not significantly different between spontaneous and NUC-induced HBsAg seroclearance. However, even after HBsAg seroclearance, the annual risk of HCC exceeds the recommended cutoff for HCC surveillance, suggesting continued monitoring is necessary.
