Solar Photo-Catalytic ozonation on γ-alumina for the removal of dyes in wastewater

A. Ikhlaq et al.

Summary: The present study demonstrated that the solar catalytic ozonation process using gamma-alumina was highly efficient for the decolourization of Reactive Red 183. The synergic process of O-3/UV/Al2O3 showed the best decolourization efficiency among the tested processes. Adsorption of dye and radical mechanism were found to play significant roles in the overall removal efficiency of the synergic process.

Photochemical origin of reactive radicals and halogenated organic substances in natural waters: A review

Yongxia Dong et al.

Summary: Halogenated organic compounds, previously thought to be mainly anthropogenic, can also be formed through photochemical reactions in sunlit surface waters. Halide ions in natural waters may be oxidized to reactive halogen species by photochemistry, leading to reactions with organic substances. The chemical mechanism of halogenation remains complex and challenging to fully understand.

Indirect photodegradation of sulfathiazole and sulfamerazine: Influence of the CDOM components and seawater factors (salinity, pH, nitrate and bicarbonate)

Xinyu Tang et al.

Summary: The presence of CDOM significantly increased the photodegradation rates of ST and SM in an indirect degradation process, following pseudofirst order kinetics. Analysis of CDOM revealed that exogenous components with high molecular weight and more aromatic groups played a crucial role in the photodegradation of ST and SM. Seawater factors also influenced the process by affecting the steady-state concentrations of reactive intermediates.

Microheterogeneous Distribution of Hydroxyl Radicals in Illuminated Dissolved Organic Matter Solutions

Shuwen Yan et al.

Summary: Hydroxyl radicals (OH·) are reactive species generated through solar irradiation of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in surface waters. This study found that the concentration of OH· in CDOM microphase is significantly higher than in the aqueous phase, suggesting CDOM behaves as a natural microreactor. The elevated concentrations of photogenerated OH· within CDOM may improve understanding of hydrophobic pollutant degradation and play important roles in the phototransformation of CDOM.
