Global burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance in 2019: a systematic analysis

Christopher J. L. Murray et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to global human health, and this study provides the most comprehensive estimates of AMR burden to date. By estimating deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) associated with bacterial AMR in 204 countries and territories in 2019, the study highlights the impact of resistance and the leading pathogen-drug combinations contributing to it.

Assessment of global health risk of antibiotic resistance genes

Zhenyan Zhang et al.

Summary: The study analyzes 4572 metagenomic samples to illustrate the global patterns of antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) distribution in diverse habitats. They quantitatively evaluate the health risk to humans of 2561 ARGs by integrating human accessibility, mobility, pathogenicity, and clinical availability. With machine learning, they map the antibiotic resistance threats in global marine habitats with over 75% accuracy.

Antibiotic practices among household members and their domestic animals within rural communities in Cumilla district, Bangladesh: a cross-sectional survey

Joseph Paul Hicks et al.

Summary: In rural households in Bangladesh, only 48% of respondents were aware of antibiotics, and a significant proportion of people did not use antibiotics correctly when they were sick. Interventions are needed at the community and health systems levels to reduce inappropriate antibiotic use.

Patterns of antibiotic prescribing and appropriateness for respiratory tract infections in a teaching hospital in Jordan

Sireen M. Alkhaldi et al.

Summary: The study found that inappropriate use of antibiotics is a global public health issue and aimed to investigate patterns of antibiotic prescribing for respiratory tract infections in Jordan. Analysis of prescriptions in family medicine clinics revealed that 27.3% of all prescriptions included antibiotics, with penicillins being the most commonly prescribed. However, only 28.8% of all antibiotics prescribed were considered appropriate. Older patients and hospital/university employees were more likely to be prescribed antibiotics compared to younger patients and Ministry of Health employees.

Summary: In Turkish hospitals, the point prevalence of antimicrobial use is high with almost half of the patients receiving antimicrobial treatment, but there is also inappropriate use. Majority of antimicrobials are prescribed empirically, with respiratory tract infections being the most common indication.

Exploring gender differences in knowledge and practices related to antibiotic use in Southeast Asia: A scoping review

Phuc Pham-Duc et al.

Summary: Research on gender differences in antibiotic use in Southeast Asia is limited and focuses on variations in knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. Targeted educational interventions tailored to meet the specific needs of males and females are recommended for reducing inappropriate antibiotic use. Further qualitative research is needed to understand the factors influencing differences in knowledge and practices related to antibiotic use between genders.

Prescribing antibiotics in adults with respiratory tract infections in Lebanon

Najla A. Lakkis et al.

Summary: Antibiotic resistance is a global concern due to inappropriate use, including unnecessary and incorrect prescriptions. This study in Lebanon found a high prevalence of inappropriate antibiotic prescribing for respiratory tract infections, calling for urgent interventions to promote antibiotic stewardship and limit unnecessary use.

Organization of antibiotic stewardship in Europe: the way to go

Winfried Kern

Summary: The European Union conference highlighted the importance of reducing inappropriate use of antimicrobial agents by establishing antimicrobial teams in hospitals, providing feedback to prescribers, and conducting educational activities. However, despite improvements in antibiotic susceptibility testing and educational efforts, Europe is facing challenges with antimicrobial resistance shifting to VRE and multidrug-resistant gramnegative bacteria, along with stagnant antibiotic consumption patterns across countries.
