Enhanced peroxidase-mediated biodegradation of polyethylene using the bacterial consortia under H2O2-biostimulation

Samira Mohammadi et al.

Summary: This study investigated a novel biotreatment process for the degradation of plastic wastes, specifically low-density polyethylene (LDPE) films, using a bacterial consortium capable of peroxidase production in the presence of H2O2. Results showed that the selected bacterial consortia effectively degraded LDPE films, with improved degradation observed when H2O2 was added to stimulate microbial activity. The study also confirmed the depolymerization of LDPE films and the ability of the selected bacterial species to use them as carbon and energy sources.

Numerical study of strain development in high-density polyethylene geomembrane liner system in landfills using a new constitutive model for municipal solid waste

Wu Gao et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigates the tensile strain development in high-density polyethylene (HDPE) geomembrane (GMB) liner systems in landfills. A new constitutive model for municipal solid waste (MSW) was employed to analyze the influence of various factors on tensile strains. The results reveal that landfill geometry, interface friction angles, and waste settlement significantly affect the development of tensile strains. Mitigation strategies, such as using a HDPE GMB with different friction angles on its upper and underlying interfaces, increasing the number of benches, and reducing the slope inclination, are shown to reduce the maximum tensile strain caused by waste placement and settlement.

An update on polyethylene and biodegradable plastic mulch films and their impact on the environment

Harshitha Somanathan et al.

Summary: Agricultural biodegradable mulch films are an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional plastic mulch films, offering advantages in increasing crop yield while protecting the soil and the environment. Degradable mulch films can be tilled into the soil after use and are expected to disintegrate over time, reducing soil pollution and environmental contamination caused by improper disposal of plastic films.

Microbial and physicochemical responses of anaerobic hydrogen-producing granular sludge to polyethylene micro(nano)plastics

Yu-Ting Zhang et al.

Summary: This study reveals the microbial and physicochemical responses of anaerobic hydrogen-producing granular sludge (HPG) to polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs) with different concentrations and sizes. The results show that the inhibitory effect of PE-MPs on hydrogen production by HPG is dependent on concentration and size, and higher concentrations and smaller sizes lead to more severe effects.

Full circle: Challenges and prospects for plastic waste management in Australia to achieve circular economy

Rumana Hossain et al.

Summary: This study provides a systematic literature review of Australia's plastic waste management system and finds that despite the exponential growth in plastic consumption, Australia's national recovery rate is only 11.5%. Household plastic waste accounts for nearly half of the total, with high-density polyethylene being the most commonly generated polymer. The market growth of biodegradable plastics is slower than expected. The construction sector consumes the largest quantity of recycled plastics, but only 10% of recycled materials are used locally across Australian industries. Implementing state-of-the-art processing facilities, diversified recycling technology, and policy reforms are necessary to address the plastic waste problem.

Tracking microplastics biodegradation through CO2 emission: Role of photoaging and mineral addition

Yalan Chen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that microbial incubation reduced the size and dissolved organic carbon content of microplastics (MPs), and introduced more oxygen-containing functional groups potentially through microbial colonization. Additionally, model minerals altered the physicochemical properties of MPs and provided a habitat for microbial growth, enhancing carbon mineralization and CO2 emissions. Aging and minerals also influenced microflora composition and gene expression, contributing to increased CO2 and N2O emissions from the corresponding artificial soils.
