Investigation of two different size microplastic degradation ability of thermophilic bacteria using polyethylene polymers

Ceyhun Akarsu et al.

Summary: Several studies have shown that conventional wastewater treatment systems cannot completely retain many types of microplastics. This study investigated the biodegradation ability of two different sizes of PE by using two thermophilic bacteria called Anoxybacillus flavithermus Gecek4s and Bacillus firmus ST5. The results showed that Gecek4s could colonize the polymer surface and cause surface damage, while ST5 could not efficiently degrade bigger-sized particles.

A Children's Health Perspective on Nano- and Microplastics

Kam Sripada et al.

Summary: This commentary summarizes the knowns and unknowns about exposures to nano-and microplastics (NMPs) during pregnancy and childhood. Currently, there is a lack of research on child-specific exposures to NMPs, and exposure estimates rely on assumptions rather than empirical measurements. Furthermore, the toxicological research on NMPs has not focused specifically on child health, despite their vulnerability. More research is needed to fill these knowledge gaps and spur policymakers and industries to address the safety of NMPs.

PET microplastics affect human gut microbiota communities during simulated gastrointestinal digestion, first evidence of plausible polymer biodegradation during human digestion

Alba Tamargo et al.

Summary: Microplastics are a recognized global problem due to their presence in natural environments and the food chain. This study found that microplastics not only have an impact on human microbiota, but also undergo biotransformation in the gastrointestinal tract. The researchers observed that microplastics alter the composition of the human colonic microbial community, and hypothesized that some members of the microbiota adhere to the surface of microplastics, promoting the formation of biofilms. Considering the increasing exposure to microplastics in consumer products, it is important to investigate the effects of plastics on gut microbiome functionality and their potential degradation by intestinal bacteria.

Summary: Early life is a critical period for the establishment and function of the gut ecosystem. In vitro gut models are used as a relevant alternative to in vivo assays due to regulatory, technical, and cost reasons. This study adapted the Mucosal Artificial Colon (M-ARCOL) to specific physicochemical and microbial parameters from toddlers, resulting in the Tm-ARCOL. In vitro fermentations were performed to validate this model, and results were compared to in vivo data. The newly developed colonic model showed distinct microbial signatures and differences in gut functions between toddler and adult conditions. This in vitro model will be useful for studying gut microbiome in pediatric nutrition and health-related studies.

Polystyrene nanoplastics exposure caused defective neural tube morphogenesis through caveolae-mediated endocytosis and faulty apoptosis

Summary: Growing evidence suggests that bioaccumulation of polystyrene nanoplastics has destructive effects on health, especially affecting fetal development with potential risks of developmental abnormalities such as neural tube defects. The study demonstrates that PS-NPs can cross placental barriers and impact fetal development, leading to suppressive effects on embryo development and increased frequency of congenital abnormalities, particularly in the nervous system. Summary: Fish have limited capability to utilize carbohydrates compared to mammals. In this study, zebrafish fed with omnivorous and herbivorous diets showed better glucose homeostasis due to enrichment of the commensal bacterium Cetobacterium somerae, which produces acetate. Dietary supplementation of acetate promotes glucose utilization in zebrafish, and the beneficial effect of acetate and C. somerae on glucose homeostasis is mediated through parasympathetic activation. These findings suggest potential strategies for improving fish carbohydrate utilization.
