Persistent free radicals in biochar enhance superoxide-mediated Fe(III)/Fe (II) cycling and the efficacy of CaO2 Fenton-like treatment

Shuqi Zhang et al.

Summary: The study developed an efficient Fenton-like system using CaO2/BC composites as oxidants and tartaric acid-chelated Fe(III) as catalysts, enhancing Fe(II) regeneration and SMX degradation. The system showed higher efficiency in utilizing O-2(center dot-) for Fe(II) regeneration and enhancing SMX degradation. Positive correlation was found between SMX degradation rates and EPR signal intensities of biochar-derived persistent free radicals in CaO2/BC.

The reduction of nitrobenzene by extracellular electron transfer facilitated by Fe-bearing biochar derived from sewage sludge

Yue Lu et al.

Summary: In this study, the addition of Fe-bearing sludge-derived biochar combined with Geobacter sulfurreducens accelerated the reduction of NB, forming biochar with redox-active centers. Through the microbial dissimilatory iron reduction mechanism, the biotic and abiotic reduction rates of NB were effectively improved.

Energy Taxis toward Redox-Active Surfaces Decreases the Transport of Electroactive Bacteria in Saturated Porous Media

Lecheng Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that electroactive bacteria with higher Fe(III) reduction abilities demonstrate greater retention in ferrihydrite-coated sand in porous media. Increasing the concentrations of electron donor, shuttle, and acceptor significantly reduced the mobility of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 through redox-active porous media.

Determination of Instinct Components of Biomass on the Generation of Persistent Free Radicals (PFRs) as Critical Redox Sites in Pyrogenic Chars for Persulfate Activation

Wei Wu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the activation of PS on BC derived from various sludges with different organic or inorganic components. Results showed that the properties of SBCs were influenced by the inherent components in the sludges, with higher N-containing content promoting the generation of PFRs and metal content inhibiting this process. A poly-parameter relationship was established to predict the efficiency of PS activation for organic degradation.

Photochemistry of biochar during ageing process: Reactive oxygen species generation and benzoic acid degradation

Kaikai Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the photogeneration of center dot OH and O-1(2) in biochar suspension under simulated solar light irradiations for the degradation of organic pollutants. It was found that biochar derived from rice husk with 550 degrees C of charring temperature (R550) could effectively degrade benzoic acid, with UV light enhancing the degradation efficiency possibly by promoting the production of center dot OH and O-1(2).
