Summary: This study investigated the response of soil bacterial communities to heavy metal pollution in different habitats of an abandoned polymetallic mine. The results showed significant variations in the diversity and composition of bacterial communities among different soil habitats. Heterogeneous selection played a crucial role in shaping the bacterial community composition. The study also identified key factors driving the variations in bacterial community composition, such as the total contents of Cu and Zn in tailing and remediation areas, and bioavailable Mn and Cd, total nitrogen, available nitrogen, soil organic carbon, vegetation coverage, and plant diversity in undisturbed and natural recovery areas.

Summary: The results of this study indicate that the rate of straw return significantly affects soil denitrification potential and the community composition of denitrifying bacteria, with increasing straw return rates leading to higher soil DP and abundance of nirK and nirS genes. However, the a-diversity of the denitrifying communities remained unaffected by chemical fertilization and straw rates.

Summary: Improper disposal of heavy metal-contaminated iron ore tailings poses a significant risk to the surrounding environments. Adding compost could reduce heavy metal accumulation in ryegrass and promote plant growth. The high concentration of organic matter in compost treatments likely enhanced the mobilisation of Cu and Zn for plant uptake.

Summary: This review focuses on the effects of biochar on diverse types of soil pollution, including the influence of feedstocks on biochar properties and its effects on heavy metals, organic pollutants, and greenhouse gas emissions in soil. The study suggests that the selection of appropriate biochar should consider the feedstocks used and their properties. Recommendations for feedstocks selection are provided to maximize the efficiency of biochar in pollution control.

Summary: This study used a corrected response surface methodology to optimize the operation strategy for treating rare earth elements wastewater using microalgae. By investigating the effects of temperature, illumination intensity, and microalgae concentration, nine models were obtained and then modified based on initial ammonia nitrogen concentrations. The results demonstrate that optimizing microalgae dosage can effectively treat wastewater.

Summary: This study investigates the functional characteristics of microbial communities in different mangrove habitats and highlights the potential influence of soil texture on the abundance of N, S, and C metabolic genes. The results suggest that the physicochemical properties of mangrove soil have a greater impact on the functional microbial groups than functional genes.

Summary: This study investigated the pollution of nitrate in water sources from the largest rare earth mining site in southern China. The results showed a high proportion of samples with nitrate concentrations exceeding the health standard, with the highest risk found in the mining area. The study also found that nitrate pollution is influenced by multiple nitrogen sources and transformation processes.

Summary: Soil heavy metal contamination caused by mining activities is a global issue that threatens public health. Biochar, as an environmentally friendly soil remediation agent, can effectively immobilize heavy metals. However, research on biochar remediation in mining areas is limited and the remediation effect is influenced by various factors. It is necessary to systematically unravel the knowledge of biochar remediation and provide guidance for future studies.

Summary: The mining of ionic rare earth elements in Ganzhou has resulted in the destruction of vegetation in large areas of barren tailings. This study investigated the effects of soil additives combined with revegetation on the preservation of nutrients and microbial communities in the tailings. The results showed that the additives could buffer soil acidification, delay the loss of soil organic matter, and reduce the runoff loss of nitrogen compounds and sulfate. The bacterial diversity increased in some treatments, while fungal diversity remained unchanged. The microbial communities in the treatments showed closer interactions compared to the control group.

Summary: This study estimated the potential contributions of various electron donors to denitrification in paddy soil during the flooding-drying process. The results showed that autotrophic denitrification driven by Fe2+ and Mn(2+) was the main mechanism for gaseous N-loss during the first phase of drying, while other electron donors, including organic matter, were the major contributors for denitrification in the second phase.

Summary: This paper summarizes the positive effects of biochar on microorganisms in soil bioremediation, including acting as a shelter, providing nutrients, and improving soil conditions. These effects result in variations in microbial abundance, activity, and community structure. Biochar also acts as an electron mediator to promote electron transfer in microbial degradation. However, the potential toxic substances carried by biochar that can threaten microbial communities should not be overlooked. This review helps us better understand the role of biochar in soil bioremediation and enables targeted selection and modification of biochar for desired outcomes in practical applications.

Summary: Root exudates play a significant role in shaping rhizosphere denitrification, with factors such as plant species, soil type, soil moisture, and root exudation medium influencing the quantity and quality of exudates; the interaction between soil properties and plant metabolism effects on root exudation largely control rhizosphere denitrification activity.
