Linking local natural background levels in groundwater to their generating hydrogeochemical processes in Quaternary alluvial aquifers

Chiara Zanotti et al.

Summary: This study calculated local NBLs in groundwater by analyzing redox-sensitive species and identified the generating hydrogeochemical processes. The results showed that the spatial variability of the target species is mainly influenced by redox conditions, highlighting the importance of considering local NBLs and their associated hydrogeochemical processes for sustainable groundwater management.

Ultramafic geoecosystems as a natural source of Ni, Cr, and Co to the environment: A review

Jakub Kierczak et al.

Summary: Ultramafic soils, developed on rocks from the Earth's mantle and enriched with Ni, Cr, and Co, are a natural phenomenon with increased metal content as a peculiar geochemical background, not a result of pollution. However, these metals may pose potential health risks through the food chain.

Regional occurrence of aqueous tungsten and relations with antimony, arsenic and molybdenum concentrations (Sardinia, Italy)

Rosa Cidu et al.

Summary: Tungsten (W) is rarely found in natural waters, but can potentially enter the human body through plants, vegetables, and drinking water, potentially causing toxic effects. This study investigated the regional distribution of W in aquatic systems in Sardinia, Italy, and factors affecting its mobility. High concentrations of W were mainly found in mine waters and thermal waters, possibly related to specific chemical conditions.

Rees and other critical raw materials in Cretaceous Mediterranean-type bauxite: The case of the Sardinian ore (Italy)

Giovanni Mongelli et al.

Summary: Mediterranean-type bauxite deposits in Sardinia were formed during the Upper Cretaceous, controlled by monsoonal climate and structural frame. The deposits contain boehmite, kaolinite, hematite, and goethite, with differences in Al2O3 and SiO2 contents among different bauxite types. Critical raw materials like Sc, Ga, Nb, Hf, Ta, and W covary with Al(2)O(3) contents, and REE-rich minerals are concentrated in certain horizons of the bauxite. The ore in Sardinia contains significant amounts of metals characterized by supply risk and economic importance.
