Momentum and energy transfer in open-channel flow over streamwise ridges

A. Zampiron et al.

Summary: Stereoscopic particle image velocimetry measurements were used to study the interaction between ridge-induced secondary currents and turbulence in open-channel flows. The analysis showed that secondary currents controlled the shape of mean velocity distribution, and there was comparable production rate of turbulent kinetic energy via exchange with dispersive kinetic energy at the elevation of secondary current cell centers.

Contributions of different scales of turbulent motions to the mean wall-shear stress in open channel flows at low-to-moderate Reynolds numbers

Yanchong Duan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the contributions of different scale motions to the mean wall-shear stress in smooth-walled open channel flows, revealing the significant impact of large-scale and very-large-scale motions on the wall-shear stress. Comparisons with closed channel flows show slightly higher and lower contributions in specific wavelength ranges in open channel flows, indicating the important role of free-surface effects in open channel flows. Potential mechanisms are discussed to support the observed differences between the two types of flows.

Shallow mixing layers between non-parallel streams in a flat-bed wide channel

Zhengyang Cheng et al.

Summary: When two converging flows of unequal velocities and different flow directions come into contact, large-scale coherent structures are generated, including Kelvin-Helmholtz vortices and streamwise-oriented vortical cells. The mixing layer formed in this process affects flow, turbulence structure, and sediment entrainment mechanisms.

On the influence of collinear surface waves on turbulence in smooth-bed open-channel flows

C. Peruzzi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the alterations in turbulence in open-channel flows caused by the passage of surface waves, using experimental data collected in a laboratory flume facility. By decomposing the velocity signal and proposing a novel outer length scale, the study identifies a genuine overlap layer and provides insights into turbulent statistics in the current-dominated flow region.
